“I’m tired, John,” He murmurs. Barely a whisper. John swallows, feeling irrationally helpless.
“I can see that,” He responds quietly, tracing an eyebrow with the pad of his thumb. “Sleep, then,” He can hear the crack in his own voice—a perfect match for the one in his chest. He hopes that Sherlock won’t notice, won’t try to pick it all apart.
“Not what I meant,” He rumbles, as he drifts off and away, leaving John alone in wakefulness to wonder what the hell had just happened.

John rises from the chair, the anger and frustration and hurt overwhelming him, bursting out of every pore, and he doesn’t even know for sure that it’s Sherlock he’s angry at, really, but the only reason he tied himself to Mary in the first place is because the person he really loved left him behind, and the woman he married once sat in the shadows above a darkened swimming pool and aimed a sniper rifle at his heart and later shot his best friend in cold blood and cuckolded him and just gave birth to a child that wasn’t his and right now he just can’t do this, he just fucking can’t do this anymore.

“Aziraphale, you in here?” He knocks and then pushes the door open, finds a cozy slice of paradise behind it. A soft, fluffy sofa. Bookshelves that are much more organized than downstairs. A tiny kitchen, off to the side, with just enough space for one, and a bay window looking out over the city. Lastly, through a door to his left, a bedroom with an attached ensuite. His eyes drag past the soft looking tartan blanket, past the armoire no doubt holding clothes a few centuries old, and finally to the bathroom, where the door stands open, and Aziraphale stands at the sink, rubbing his face.
The sight makes Crowley stop in his tracks, eyes locking with Aziraphale’s in the ornate mirror. Aziraphale’s hair is wild and out of place; longer than Crowley has ever seen it. Tantalizing pale curls just begging for Crowley’s hands. He’s grown a beard, too. It looks like sheep’s wool, like it would be soft and pillowy if he sank his fingers into it.
Fuck’s sake, six thousand bloody years and it still barely takes a change in hairstyle for Crowley to fall in love all over again.
