He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.
Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. His mother stared at him, wide eyed and more than a little panicked. "Shane, honey, what do you remember?"
He searched his mind for a memory of this game, of the injury - but nothing came to him. The pain worsened, and he groaned, clutching his head. Fuck, that hurt.
"Shane, is okay. Don't hurt yourself more, please." Rozanov said. He moved his hand towards Shane's, trying to grasp hold of it.
Shane swatted him away violently, aghast. What the fuck was he playing at?
"Get the fuck off of me, Rozanov."
Both Rozanov and his mother gaped at him.
"Shane-" Rozanov tried again, but Shane wasn't having it.
He was beginning to panic. It was too much; the too-bright blue lights, his mother's panic, the constant beeping of the monitor, the big gaping whole in his memory, the godawful scratchy feeling of the cheap fabric of the hospital gown - it was all making him lose his fucking mind because it was making him itch and too hot and - and worst of all, Ilya fucking Rozanov was trying to hold his hand and call him sweetheart in front of his mom.

“You still want me to blow you later, yes?” Ilya murmurs a few minutes later, after he reluctantly pulls his fingers from Hollander’s mouth and washes his hands under the tap. His hands fall to either side of Hollander’s thighs where they rest on the counter.
Hollander only whines and nods his head hard enough that it knocks against Ilya’s shoulder, Ilya grabs the back of his neck and pulls him down. Hollander groans thankfully, panting wetly into his shoulder. Ilya doesn’t even care that Hollander is definitely smearing spit all over his tuxedo.
“You need to get through the rest of the night then,”
“But this feels so good.” Hollander slurs against his shoulder.

Summary
When Ilya says “Shane” instead of Hollander, something shifts in him. Panic hits fast and hard, and Shane’s first instinct is to run before the moment can turn into something real.
Ilya doesn’t let him.
“Don’t leave,” Ilya says. “Talk to me.”
Panic and the emotional crash comes to him. Shane feels exposed, needy, and embarrassed by how much he wants to stay, but Ilya keeps him exactly where he is, grounding him.
“You’re not going anywhere, da?”
Held in place and forced to face what he’s feeling, Shane has the chance to finally ask for what he wants.
