Summary
“So,” Vernon says. “You gonna tell me who Jun is?”
Minghao has never heard a more loaded question in her life. Jun is so many things. She’s Minghao’s best friend. She’s someone Minghao hasn’t spoken to in three years. She’s the first girl Minghao ever loved; she’s the last girl Minghao ever loved. Jun made Minghao infinitely better, and yet paradoxically, she ruined her for anyone else.
“Someone I used to know,” is all Minghao settles for saying.
Vernon’s brow creases, as if he understands that this is probably out of his realm as a suffering IT. “Sounds complicated.”
[Minghao reconciles herself to the fact her feelings are unreciprocated before she even really understands what feelings are. But that was back then. Now she has absolutely no idea where she stands. Or, if she even stands anywhere at all.]

Summary
“You have too much faith in me," Sicheng says.
“You don’t have enough faith in you.” Yuta rolls his eyes, then quietly adds, “Or me.”
It’s 3AM in a Waffle House in California. The quality of the call is so bad that Sicheng can’t even make out half of what Yuta is saying. It’s a pretty random time to fall in love, and later, Sicheng will ask the universe for a re-do— but right now, he just chalks the strange flutter in his chest up to utter exhaustion and waits for his waffles to arrive.
(Distance douses the heart in radioactive material then runs it through a wormhole. Or something like that.)

Summer before freshman year, Chenle is told three things:
1) Take regular physics if you want to live
2) Sit at the O form at the AP tests so that the memes will be relevant, and
3) Don’t fall in love with your best friend.Unfortunately, he's never been good at following directions.

Krystal yelps and swats him playfully, but she’s grinning—that bright, princess grin that is as lovely as it is sly. Seulgi doesn’t really like Krystal, but my God, that smile. It makes strangers spiral into helpless, sudden love—puppy love, except totally one-sided and minus the innocence. Seulgi’s seen her wield that smile like a weapon, these past few days since she’s met her.

“You’re going to Korea, uhh, probably in Korea the next time you hear this. SM’s a big company, and it’s a really good opportunity because I guess it’s really famous, which is kind of cool. Maybe it’ll turn out well, maybe it won’t, just―just remember you made a promise to yourself. You’re making a promise to yourself right now, that even if you’re not starting off with the...best reasons or intentions, you’ll stick it out until the end. Actually, I don’t know if you’ll stick it out, maybe they’ll reject you or you’ll change your mind and go back to Vancouver or Guangzhou or something...but as long as you’re still there, since you got in anyway, try make it something you love, no matter what happens. You like acting, right? Doesn’t matter how you got into it, just forget about that. Look, hopefully you still have the same values, and you’ll start doing things for yourself―and wow, I sound stupid. Ah. But yeah, when..if...you listen to this again, just...I want you to stop and ground yourself and keep going until the end, got it? It’s a promise, okay? Awesome. Li Jiaheng, jiayou, I hope this helps. Yeah.”

"I like your lipstick," Sulli had said, earnestly and eagerly. "What is it?"
"Plum Blossom." Krystal had bought it merely for its name, not for the color. That was the way she worked. If it sounded like purple prose and poetry, it'd be hers.

Summary
That’s where he first saw Jaehyun.
In the park, jogging with his colour-coordinated athletic clothing, breaths steaming the air. His ears were as pink as his cheeks. His eyes were curious when his jog slowed to a walk, and then a stop in front of Doyoung. The little LGBT+ pin on his jacket shone in the dull light. He was too beautiful to look at, so Doyoung ignored him.

Summary
He lies there in bed with the light still on, fully clothed, and thinks about the word annoying. Thinks about himself, and how he forces his opinions onto other people, how he never shuts up, how he laughs at inappropriate things and mocks others mercilessly for their mistakes. He thinks about himself, about how he looks terrible whenever he’s stressed, how the weight drops off him and his skin gets dry and his attitude gets worse, and he wonders why he wouldn't be called annoying. Why wouldn’t Mark go to a party instead of skyping his annoying boyfriend with his selfish thoughts and mean tongue.

Sometimes Renjun studied their blueprints. Everything was so calculated, in between haphazard and precise, those intricate lines, measured and balanced, everything in place. Sometimes, though, he thought those buildings they planned to build could only exist in their dreams.

Junhui is his makeshift gauge, the human thermometer Minghao uses to read a room at any given moment. When Junhui laughs it is safe to laugh. When Junhui listens intently Minghao bites his bottom lip in concentration. Mimicking, he learned in a science book when he was a kid, is the most basic animal behavior. From lion cubs to tiny flightless birds, babies play pretend to survive. So Minghao imitates, sounds and postures and smiles. And Junhui’s easy affection, his reflex-like tenderness, Minghao imitates that too. Junhui stage-whispers once, pointing, I took him under my wing, his fond laughter cascading lighter and brighter than water. In the shade, protected, Minghao grows into his own limbs, boy becoming man. Between them there is gratitude, exchanging hands like currency.

It shouldn’t surprise Sicheng, in a town this small, that word travels as quickly as it does.
By 7:46, word has traveled as far as the school house on the far side of the village, where Sicheng is busy checking students off as they walk in. They pass him by, bowing respectfully one by one, their whispers carrying to him down the wide hallway.
A witch has come to town.

Mark instinctively turns to look, and sure enough, there’s Donghyuck, chatting with a few people Mark vaguely recognizes. He’s wearing a huge t-shirt and denim shorts, and the room sort of goes fuzzy around the edges, just for a second. One of Donghyuck’s friends says something, and Donghyuck throws his head back to laugh, skin shiny with sweat and teeth glinting white.
Mark’s mind starts to stumble towards adjectives, towards descriptions, and nausea suddenly rises in his stomach, bile burning his throat. God, he drank too much too fast, and it’s making things not make sense, like Donghyuck, standing against the wall and looking—

In a school-wide poll conducted through a Google form and shared at least ten times on the Newspaper Club’s Facebook page by an overzealous Chenle Zhong, Mark had been crowned “Most Likely to Win a Nobel Prize” by a whopping 76 percent of the school population. To some (read: Jaemin), it was only because Jaemin had been snubbed from the category after an AP Lang catalyzed fall-out with the Editor-in-Chief, leading him instead to be awarded “Most Likely to Run a Ponzi Scheme” for his valiant efforts at mediation. The other 34 percent of votes belonged to Yukhei Wong, whose greatest claim to fame was coding a multimillion dollar app and also Not Actually Going To Their School.

Wasn’t Heejin supposed to be number one, anyway? Star of the show. Four out of nine. First girl of the month. Hyunjin’s stayed up countless nights on her couch or in her bed, scrolling through media articles, keeping up with the headlines: Jeon Heejin serenades fans with her guitar in rooftop mini-concert. Jeon Heejin makes generous donation to an animal welfare association. Jeon Heejin opens up a quaint café in Hapjeong-dong, Mapo-gu. In this way, she really has always been ahead. Hyunjin looks at Heejin, her round, patient face, the unspoken truths between them: The amount of time we’ve spent apart is slowly catching up with the amount of time we were together. You’ve aged into this far more gracefully than I. Those really were the best years of our lives.
