Summary
Julien and Occtis take the opportunity to talk during their last night in Dol-Makjar, knowing that the next day they will head northward towards Timmony, and eventually the Golden Orchard.
“Hey, this is for you. Though you probably don’t need it.”
A bottle of wine was pressed into his hands and Occtis sat down in front of him, almost prim even when he was seated on the ground.
“It’s from Hal’s cellar, so it’s gotten a little warm, I hope that’s fine,” Occtis said. “I can’t drink it, so…”
“I don’t mind warm wine,” Julien said, popping off the cork and taking a swig. Not Davinos wine, but tolerable. “And tonight is a good night not to think.”
“We won’t have Thaisha with us to get rid of your hangover in the morning,” Occtis warned.
“She wouldn’t have done it anyway, so the situation has not changed,” Julien said. He studied Occtis a moment. He still looked a little banged up, but better than before. “Someone finally got around to tending your injuries?”
“Uh, yeah. Kattigan,” Occtis said.
“I’ll have to remember to thank him,” Julien said, taking another gulp of wine.

Summary
Julien knew two things to be true: one, his luck had always been abysmal, and two, Taisha Lloy could scent vulnerability like a wolf could smell blood. She just couldn’t resist a project. After all, it was one of her little projects that had gotten them into this mess in the first place.
In which, Taisha finds Julien in the bathhouse, Julien finds himself fixating on death, and Occtis, who happens to be a little bit dead, finds himself briefly underwater.

Summary
A frustrating experience during a battle causes Julien and Occtis to reassess the argument that they had outside Obrimus Manor.
“What the fuck was that?” Julien’s voice was loud and clear and, most of all, more furious than Occtis had ever heard it before.
He grimaced slightly, but he wasn’t the one being yelled at, not this time, so he decided to take a few steps away from the group to begin the process of re-summoning Pin, who’d been destroyed in the battle.
“What was what?” Thimble asked, and she sounded genuinely confused. Human-sized again, and Occtis had almost gotten used to that. “Kattigan saved your life back there. Why are you so angry about it?”
It was an odd little reminder that Thimble hadn’t been along during Occtis’s trip with Julien to the old empire. She didn’t know Julien, not really. She knew some version of him that he’d been before his father had been murdered, but she didn’t know him now.
“I didn’t need any help,” Julien said, and Occtis could see him glaring around at the others. “I was fine.”

Summary
"Yeah, well, if she sees you holding me like this you're in just as much danger. She'll get the wrong impression."
"And what wrong impression is that?"
That you might not actually hate me? That this might be a case of mutual attraction? That my body will still function so I can have the sort of physical relationship that I'm really fucking wanting right now?
"Julien," Occtis says with quiet deadpan despite the cacophony in his head and the phantom thundering of his heart, "you have your hand around my neck and I'm completely naked. I'm pretty sure that's going to give anyone the wrong impression."
