But that’s when he notices them: the rings.
The shining knickknacks on the table to Sam’s left aren’t just pieces of bargain-bin estate fluff. It’s jewelry. Now that Dean’s moved away, a shaft of light falls right onto the table, reflecting light directly into Sam’s vision. He blinks away the bright spots, and there they are. Sitting innocuously on the edge of the table closest to him.
Later, it will feel like fate. Right now, the feeling is inexplicable, as Sam’s burgeoning sentence dies on his tongue.
Or: After Chuck has been defeated and life is as good as it's ever been, Sam impulsively buys a pair of rings at an estate sale. Dean starts acting strangely.

Dean blinks up at Sam with big green eyes and curls his hand into a fist, nails biting into the tough skin of his palm. It’s a nervous habit that Sam hasn’t seen in…years. His face, outside of the furrow in his brow, is unlined. Panic makes Sam's voice unleveled as he asks,
“Dean…what year is it?”
Dean shakes his head. “It’s 2006.”
Sam stares at his brother. His brother is twenty-six years old.
Or: A magical object in the bunker swaps a 26 y/o Dean and a 40 y/o Dean. A confused Sam—who has been in a relationship with his Dean for a few years—tries to pick up the pieces, and send this younger Dean back to his own time. Things are complicated further when 26y/o!Dean thinks the reason things are too good to be true is because he’s in a djinn dream, and he’s torn between staying and going back at all costs.

He’s wondered, sometimes, if Sam pretends these calls are random wrong numbers, that it’s some anonymous person listening to him confess his thoughts about his philosophy assignment (boring) or his cafeteria meals (surprisingly decent) or the guy he’d gone home with after a party once (and wasn’t that a revelation, Dean had hardly been able to sleep that night, and it hadn’t just been the whiskey). The same way Dean pretends that he hadn’t meant to call, that he’s going to hang up—any minute, as soon as Sam’s done talking.
