Scent patches were mandatory for anyone participating in World Junior's, but a lot of the Russian guys Shane saw in the hotel or around the rink had them loosely attached to their necks or not quite centered over their scent gland. Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.

The media loves their "friendly rivalry," and it makes great promotional material for the still-youthful league-- but the the "with benefits" part of it has to stay on the down-low both for Liliya's safety as a Russian expat and as part of the compromise in a league that's both queer- and family-friendly.
So Shane knows of no earthly explanation for why Liliya makes it her life's mission, the moment her Canadian citizenship is finalized, to turn her usual infuriating behavior on the ice up to eleven, focused entirely on getting up in Shane's face and under her skin.
Or: There are probably easier ways to tell your career-long fuckbudy that now your immigration status is safe, you're angling for commitment--ways that don't include inducing a rage blackout and hoping for a ring in the aftermath. But Liliya Rozanova wants revenge for all the years of watching Shane Hollander's media coverage and pretending she doesn't want that to be hers.

Summary
Jane uses her body weight to slam the door behind her with a resonating thud. She crashes back onto it, letting it hold her up for support. For someone so tightly-wound and controlled, it’s almost theatrical. Far more attention-grabbing than just closing the door behind her like a normal person. Jane’s fingers are spread wide against it, knuckles white with tension.
“Is someone chasing you?” Liliya can’t resist joking.
Jane’s nostrils flare, thick eyebrows knitting together as she makes burning eye contact.
“I’m standing in the hall like an idiot,” she snaps, “Stacey Hunter is right next door.”
Liliya shrugs. It’s a coordinated move, just enough to let her slouchy sweater roll down one shoulder. Jane’s eyes dart to the newly-revealed skin. Gotcha. Liliya raises her chin, letting her hair shift behind her. Under her own roaring pulse in her ears, she can hear Jane swallow.
“Fuck it,” Jane breathes, and she launches herself forwards.

He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.And Ilya is here.
He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.
“Hey, you’ve reached Shane Hollander-”
Ilya closes his eyes and lets Shane’s voice roll over him.
