Shane frowns. “What game?” he asks, and then, “Who are you?”
Ilya blinks back the panic rising in his throat. “Shane, what the fuck? Is me. Ilya.”
Shane is still frowning. “Rozanov?” he asks, and suddenly, like he’s had a premonition, Ilya knows what Shane is going to say next. Knows from the furrow between his brows and the hunch in his shoulders and the hands that are very conspicuously not reaching for him.
“Rozanov,” Shane says again. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
So this is what it feels like for your heart to break.

Miscommunication trope my beloved, when it's done well (and this is executed flawlessly) nothing hits quite like it. Ilya is living in a torment nexus for most of this and it still manages to be one of the softest hollanov fics I've ever come across. Shane is so perfectly determined to get things right, and he eventually does! But oh the bumps along the way are a little bit tragic and occasionally hilarious. I also absolutely love how Rose and Svetlana fit into things.

Shane should be here right now, should be in Ilya’s house. Ilya should be teasing him about being picky while going through delivery options for food on his phone. Shane should be discovering that Ilya has ginger ale in the fridge and the protein bars Shane mentioned liking in an interview in his pantry. He should be making out with Shane on the couch, sneaking a hand into his pants, teasing him about whether they can beat the deliveryman and arrive before he does. Shane was supposed to spend the night tonight, the Montreal team not set to leave until tomorrow afternoon because of potential bad weather in the morning. Shane should be fed and showered and ready to curl up in bed with Ilya tonight.
But Shane is in a hospital.And Ilya is here.
He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.

Ilya and honesty have such a strained relationship in The Long Game so it was fantastic (and sometimes stressful) to see how different things could be with total transparency during that time. Shane proving as he always does when things are made plain that he would move heaven and earth for Ilya, just like Ilya would do for him. Also yay Troy! I love his and Ilya's friendship.
