Summary
Todd Anderson is three months from seventeen when he runs away from home, certain of why he's leaving but less certain about where he's going. When he stumbles upon a diner with a kind waitress inside, he learns about a horse ranch known for taking on young runaways as ranch hands. Out of options, he tries his luck with it, and it's there he meets Neil, a bright, joyful boy with his own secrets.
Todd resists his feelings, afraid of history repeating itself, but over the course of one fall it becomes clear that Neil might be different, and Todd's future isn't so bleak after all.

Summary
Bishop's new partner has put out a reward for Sergeant Jake Roenick, $50,000 dollars for whoever manages to bring him in alive. In this, Bishop sees an opportunity for collaboration: by allowing a police officer to 'discover' Belcastro's illegal arms shipment, Bishop will be able to see a potential enemy gone, and Roenick will finally be able to earn his way out from behind the desk, not to mention avoid getting kidnapped for money. It's simple: Bishop inherits Belcastro’s empire, Roenick turns a blind eye; Roenick takes the credit for Belcastro’s downfall, Bishop protects him from the fallout. All he needs to do is convince Roenick.
If there happen to be other feelings involved, and if those feelings happen to be evolving--that's no one else's business but theirs.

He's got less of a handle on what kind of man Goody is now, save that he's nothing like anyone Billy has met before, nothing like he'd have expected, and that's enough to keep him standing in snow up to his calves, watching and wondering.
Goody’s still got that soft smile on his lips, and Billy rolls his eyes, wiggling his slowly numbing toes in his boots. “Only you could get sentimental over something that could kill us.”
