Shane’s heart dropped. He nodded once and sat up straighter, shoulders rolled back. “It is. I’m sorry if this is too far or whatever, but it’s what I want and I have to ask for what I want. It’s okay if you don’t want to. I’m not going to break up with you over this.” Or anything, really. Even if Ilya said he couldn’t stay a secret and wanted to fuck other people, Shane would let him.
Ilya’s own heart split in two at that. He turned, metal scraping wood on the deck, and took both of Shane’s hands in his. Time and trust linked their fingers together automatically.
“I’m not saying I do not want this,” Ilya began. Shane let out a small breath, shoulders relaxing. “But you must know, the things you are coming up with for sex are not things I have done.”
Something about the cottage made him be honest. Maybe it was the promise last summer of being honest and saying how they really felt. Maybe it was the distance between that unknown precipice and the leap of faith they took together. Whatever it was, Ilya had to come clean if he was going to keep giving Shane whatever his brain and body wanted.
