Assorted mostly self-contained snippets post-they're gonna send us to prison for jerks, aka an excuse to write whatever self-indulgent nonsense I feel like about undercover as a (formerly mustached) math teacher Bucky Barnes.

    Ch. 10 is a favorite.

**Came here while rereading to single out Ch. 10 only to find I'd already done so!**

    Summary

Bucky is so competent that it hurts my feelings is not a rational complaint to have about a person, and yet, after a year of being Captain America and partnering up with Bucky for the new and improved, post-Blip Avengers, that’s kinda how Sam’s feeling.

It’s not great. It maybe leads to Sam making some rash, ill-advised decisions like claiming he has a previously undisclosed superpower, and then getting caught in a web of lies when he ends up actually developing that surprisingly inconvenient superpower. Talking to birds had seemed like a harmless superpower, but it turns out that birds have a lot of opinions, and they don’t hesitate to tell Sam about them, especially when it comes to his supposedly subpar courting skills. Which is ridiculous, because Sam isn’t courting Bucky. Right?

Very entertaining. Sam Wilson, the Dr. Dolittle variation.

    Summary

At this point, Sam’s scanning the coffeeshop for an exit strategy from this terrible date; maybe he can trip a customer into spilling coffee on one of them, or pretend like he’s seen a friend, something, anything. His eye lands on the white guy sitting at the table behind Mike, directly in Sam’s line of sight, but not visible to Mike himself. And okay, hello, stranger. He’s gorgeous, and he’s looking up from the stack of papers on his table, right at Sam. Hot Stranger’s thick-lashed blue eyes are wide, and a pen is dangling from his fingers as if the nonsense happening at Sam’s table has shocked him into interrupting his work.

What the fuck, mouths Hot Stranger.

Sam's on a first date that starts weird and only gets weirder. Thankfully, there's a hot bystander who's ready to be a hero and save Sam from the horrors of app-based dating.

He is useful. He holds onto that. He is useful and a useful tool will not be thrown away. (For illumynare's request: How about something with Bucky realizing the Avengers actually think of him as a person? And off I went to the utterly shameless h/c place.)

    Bookmarker's Notes

Bucky gets his groove back, unaccountably.
"They like me!" Bucky snarls at him. "They all like me!"

I'm a "doctor" too and nobody should let me practice medicine. I've often wondered how Bruce gets away with it:

"It's just me," Banner says, doing something mysterious to his IV. .... "Don't worry, I'm a doctor."
"So's Stark, I think, but I don't want him anywhere near my insides," Bucky whispers, and Banner grins.
"I'm both kinds of doctor. Well, effectively." ....
    "Effectively?"
"I can't legally practice medicine, but I do know what I'm doing."
"I'm going to stop asking questions now," Bucky says. "The answers just make things worse."

    Bookmarker's Notes

Such good medical writing! Reminiscent of the best of Berton Roueche's medical mysteries: clear and easy to follow without being simplistic, and also increasingly suspenseful and involving.

    Linguistics: hypercorrection of cases.
Ch. 5: The touch lingers on his own palm, an acute awareness of the connection between he and John.
Ch. 5: The nurse nods at Sherlock, then explains to both he and John that he'll brush his teeth, suction the airway, and then they'd ask Sherlock to step out for a few minutes.
Ch. 7: " but if you need me again, I'm available for you, just leave a message with whomever is on."

Ch. 8: Use of 'nonplussed' to mean "unfazed" rather than "speechless, baffled."
