Summary
It was technically true that the world had not ended when it happened. It was also technically true that no one had died (that would come later). But Mike knew, and he suspected the others did, too, that death and/or the world ending would have been better than losing Will to Vecna.
(It was also technically true that they didn’t lose Will to Vecna, but clarifying it out loud could get someone punched in the fucking mouth, should it be uttered in the wrong company.)
or:
The aftermath of the apocalypse, and Mike must face his choices; past, present, and future.

Summary
They waited, huddled together in the abandoned shop next to Melvald’s, for what felt like an eternity. Occasionally, she would reach out with her free hand and wipe at the blood spurting from both of his nostrils. They watched until the coast was clear, and they made a break for it, hand and hand.
They are both sixteen years old when they begin running.
or:
Post-finale. El goes on the run, but she's not alone.

Summary
The painting on his wall is framed in simple wood. Nothing ornate, because Will had never liked ornate things. He used to say fancy frames distracted from the painting itself.
Mike reaches up slowly and pushes the glasses higher on his nose.
He knows what it looked like when Will was painting, hunched over the canvas, hair falling in his eyes, chewing the inside of his cheek while he worked like the act of putting color on a surface might somehow split him open.
His chest tightens, a sharp little twist beneath his ribs.
Maybe El didn’t like ornate things either, or maybe, she would have liked something big and gold. Or purple. Maybe a seventy thirty split of it, or maybe just nothing all together, no frame at all.
He doesn’t know.
He never asked, not once.
And Mike realizes with a strange, aching clarity, he’s going to die the same way she did. Unknown and unseen. Never properly loved the way he wanted to be.
or, Mike is in love with Will, and he's hit with the realization that if he were to die, no one would know.

Summary
Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

Summary
“Why do you laugh?” Mike the Brave asked. The question was utterly sincere. He could not fathom the source of the mockery, of why Mike would be laughing at his display of fealty.
Mike spluttered, his face flushing. “I—It’s just… you only got him a book off the shelf? That’s your big ‘honour to serve’ moment? It’s just… a book.” He gestured vaguely, defensively, at the book, embarrassed.
Will the Wise’s lips curved into a smile tinged with sorrow. He looked from the flustered boy to his own beloved protector, his hand reaching up to stroke his Paladin’s cheek.
“He has crossed realms for me,” Will the Wise said, his melodic voice filling the cottage. “He has faced beasts and shadows and the silence of the abyss. He would do anything for me, and I for him. The grand quests are written in songs and psalms, sung by revellers around fires and bards in the inn. But the story of us… it is written in these small things. In a fetched book, a mended cloak, a tender kiss in the dawn light.” He looked directly at the younger Mike, his gaze piercingly kind. “We like to remind each other of our affections. In every possible way. There is no deed too small to be an act of love.”
