“Wonder what Harry got me?” Louis says sarcastically as he unwraps the gift. Harry thinks Louis unwrapped his gift last on his 16th birthday, too. Which is nice. Makes him feel like he's somebody's favorite.
“Woahhhhhh,” Louis drawls in fake shock. “Would you believe that, a sweater! How original!”
Even so, he immediately gets up and pulls off his current sweater, puts on the new one. It’s light blue, like his dress shirt at the dance was, because Harry had been inspired.
“Maybe one year I’ll design and knit you one myself,” Harry says, only half joking.
“Seriously?” Louis says, his eyes shining. “Is that a promise?”
Harry can’t stop smiling. “Yeah. I promise.”
“Hey, Harry, can you make us all one, too? Can you make mine extra fluffy?” Niall asks from somewhere off to the side.
“No,” Louis answers for him, pushing the sleeves up as he reaches for a slice of the cake Harry made. “Only me.”

“I thought you were jealous for a second there,” Harry teases, a smile in his voice.
Louis pulls back just enough to glare up at him, unimpressed.
“As if,” he says with a dramatic snort. “Hell will freeze over before I let Bimbo Lena make me feel anything but annoyed." He flicks his eyes in her direction with the sharp precision of someone who’s perfected passive aggression into an Olympic sport. “Please. I’ve seen more personality in a bag of frozen peas.”
Harry barks a laugh, loud and sudden, head tipping back, curls bouncing. Louis grins despite himself. He loves that laugh—carefree and boyish, all soft edges and sunshine.
“Don’t be mean,” Harry says, still chuckling. “She was nice. Said I looked like someone out of a superhero movie. Could be a compliment.”
Louis rolls his eyes so hard it’s a miracle they don’t tumble right out of his head. “Wow. Groundbreaking. I bet she thinks Thor is a type of dog.”

In the dark, something crashes. Louis stirs, barely opening his eyes as he gropes across the bedside table for his phone. Muffled cursing is coming from the hallway, probably about ten feet away from the bedroom door.
Allowing himself the tiniest of smiles, Louis yanks the phone free from the charger and slips out of bed, leaving the blankets pooled on the floor. He doesn’t bother with shoes or clothes, moving silently across the floor in his bare feet. Eyes open now, adjusting to the shadows in the dark room, he waits behind the door, crouched down.
There’s no more noise. Louis waits, breathing slowly, steadily. He’s awake now, fully alert. He’s got a loose grip on his phone, and he doesn’t glance down at the screen no matter how much he wants to. This really shouldn’t be happening anymore. Three years, two new houses, an upgraded security system and actual money to throw at the problem means this definitely shouldn’t be happening anymore.
