Lelouch never expected to survive. Upon waking, the first thing he does is vow to never contact Suzaku or Nunnally or anyone again - no one can know that he's alive. Still, he begins to anonymously send information to Suzaku to help with Zero's work, until CC sneaks in a note with Lelouch's phone number and suddenly, Suzaku can contact him back.
And despite knowing it won't lead anywhere good, how could Lelouch possibly bring himself to not respond?

It was the night of Ashford Academy's midsummer ball. Milly Ashford had made them promise to be there; Shirley had made him promise Lelouch, specifically, would be there, with a wink. (“I’m really going to dress up, okay? He has to be there! Has to!”) For his part Suzaku needed no encouragement to monitor the man who had been Zero closely, and had arranged to meet Lelouch at eight-fifteen sharp on the north-west gate to campus. But Lelouch had never shown at all, which was unlike him, and in the end Suzaku had found him here, dozing under a random lamppost and slurring, and Lelouch might have betrayed the world but he did not slur.
A variation on S2E14: in which Suzaku finds Lelouch after taking Refrain, and everything goes to shit.
