does not mean that you have seen the entire fungus. While it is similar to how plants have extensive root networks for breathing and water intake, it is also very different. Unlike plants, which grow in tandem with its root network as it matures, the fruiting body only appears after the mycelium has accessed sufficient nutrients to nurture them. From there, the fruiting bodies emerge while the mycelium silently but surely spreads within the substrate to nurture more fruiting bodies. If this sounds familiar, that is because this is very much like how mould takes over the objects it grows on and how the visible presence of mould on bread means parts that appear safe are also inedible (or at least, unsafe for consumption). If the mushroom dies, the mycelium can produce more fruiting bodies. In order to eradicate the fungus, the mycelium network has to be exterminated as well, much like how weeds need to be extracted wholly, roots included. The alternative method to exterminate them would be to leave them to exhaust the substrate of nutrients naturally as they spread. Eventually, the mycelium will die, and the substrate is left a barren husk of what it once was. I'm glad that you also agree that mushrooms are fascinating, Trey.
