He’s even sweatier than Eddie feels, bare shoulders pinking in the sun. His arms raised to secure the pipe stretch his torso, miles of skin dusted with golden hair. The soft pouch of his belly strains against the button seam of his jeans, firm muscle everywhere else as he shifts.
He’s got on that stupid backwards baseball cap.
And is hit with a wall of scent, just—sweaty man, no other way to describe it, this heady musk. Buck’s raised arms only make it stronger, pits dark with sweat as he works. -

Buck’s brows pinched up. “What do you mean? When have you felt the most loved?”
“Don’t make a big thing of this, Buck. Promise?”
Buck made a show of crossing his heart, brows still raised curiously.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever… really felt loved in a relationship? I’m not convinced that I know what makes me feel loved…”

After finding out that Eddie doesn't know what his love language is, Buck sets about finding out for him. He begins a five week experiment, one for each love language, to figure out which will make Eddie feel the most loved.

Buck blinked. “What, like living together forever?”
A snort filled the air, and Eddie looked half amused and half serious. “I dunno, maybe? Something like that. I mean, look, it’s a new year, right? Anything could happen. But neither of us wanna be alone forever. So, maybe if we’re both still single in a year or whatever, we could just—” he waved a hand vaguely, like he was lassoing the future— ”make it official.”
“Official?” he echoed, head even fuzzier now.
Eddie’s mouth twitched. “Yeah, we could just get married, or something close enough to it."
Buck’s heart tripped over itself.
On New Year's Eve, Buck and Eddie made a drunken pact: if they were both still single in a year, they'd marry each other. They didn't mean to start sabotaging the other's love life to make it happen, but somewhere along the way, that's exactly what they ended up doing.
Now the only question is... how far are they willing to take it?

Glimpses break through anyway, every one a hot nail pressed hard into his heart—Buck cooking dinner for the 118 as Eddie scrambles around their house making sure everything is perfect, drinking coffee in the car as he drives them both to work, going home together after every shift, wiping tears from Eddie’s cheek as they watch Chris head off to college, arguing over paint colours, arguing over laundry, laughing over unhinged calls and holding each other close after bad ones, getting old, knees aching and backs giving and faces wrinkling with smile lines because every fucking day they get to wake up and the first thing they see is each other. -
