Summary
Something like grief churned in his sternum–that same something that would hit him in Boston winter when he was surrounded by stark, grey streets, and old buildings coated in snow, and twinkling Christmas lights in shop windows. The shape of it felt like Moscow along its jagged edges. Ilya shut his eyes and breathed.
This time of year, the snow, all of it made him think of his mother. Of her warm blonde hair tucked into her fuzzy winter coat and of her magenta gloves bright against the snow as she balled up handfuls of snow to throw at Ilya and Alexei. Irina had loved the snow, had loved celebrating the festive season, and Ilya had spent the last decade and a half avoiding reminders of it.
Or: Shane invites Ilya to Ottawa to spend the Christmas break with his family. Ilya deals with complex feelings about home, family, belonging, and grief.

Summary
He’s frowning down at his shoes when a sleepy, beautiful, rumpled Shane Hollander pulls open the door. God, he’s so pretty, Ilya thinks. His hair is sticking out in all directions and there’s a pink line across his cheeks where he must have been laying on his own arm. He’s only in his boxers. He gives Ilya a very sweet little smirk.
“You know where the spare key is,” he mumbles, voice rough with sleep. “Why didn’t you just use that?”
Ilya shrugs and lists to the side a bit. “Forgot. Did I wake you, baby? I’m sorry,” he’s still slurring a bit, he knows. And the ‘baby’ is a dead giveaway that he’s drunk. He hardly ever uses that pet name. Can’t resist right now.
This is his baby. His baby Shane. He loves him.
“You’re drunk,” Shane chuckles.
“Mmm,” Ilya muses. “Yes, very.”

His cheeks felt like they were on fire. Not for the first time, Shane wondered what the fuck he was doing. But he had talked about this with Ilya, he reminded himself. They were — experimenting. He had double-checked, and triple-checked, and Ilya had said the same thing, each time. If it is what you want.

More serious this time, Ilya had repeated, I want what you want.
Shane tries taking someone else home without overthinking it. He doesn’t really succeed.
