"I've got some iron tabs, but that's it. The docs around here don't really know much." There was a coppery taste in John's mouth from biting down too hard.
"Are you skipping rations when it's bad?" he asked slowly as a horrible thought occurred to him.
"Yeah. Unfortunately nobody's figured out any anti-emetics for vampires." Harry shrugged. "Hold on, I don't like that look," he added, peering up at him closely.
"How much would you need to make up for the deficit?"
"No," Harry interjected immediately. "No, Johnny. Are you insane? They'll hit us both with a court martial!"

Probably the worst thing is that he’s never met her, Jean Crosby, who’s nothing more than an ephemeral presence at best, a small photograph Harry keeps in his wallet and a stack of letters he faithfully replies to. Harry who loves her as a husband should, who had a shockingly little amount of reserve on that fateful day, taking him apart like it was nothing. Handling him like any of his instruments, confident and capable with John at his mercy.
Harry had tasted like adrenaline, already so different from the nervous man that had accidentally routed them to France. It had been so easy to forget it all: the war, the missions, the dead boys starting to accumulate in their memories.
