The air smelled like rosemary, and the rhythmic soft thudding of her mother chopping carrots was the only other sound besides their old refrigerator humming. Grace was tasked with drying the good china, a job she thought no other seven-year-old could handle. Her small hands moved carefully around the gold-rimmed plate. In her world, safety was found in the routine. Safety was found in being exactly where she was supposed to be.
