Rio snaps her eyes open, scanning the deck rapidly. It doesn’t take her long to spot the figure she’s looking for, it never does. It’s not like looking for a needle in a haystack; it’s like looking for a dagger amongst butter knives—something your hand has touched, that you intimately know the shape of, sticking out boldly among the bland and uninteresting.
Agatha Harkness walks across the upper deck of the RMS Titanic the same way she walked a crooked path in the forest, the same way she walked through colonial mansions that she stole from unassuming generals, the same way she walked into Rio’s world those few centuries ago; like she owns it.

Agatha trembled as Rio’s fingernails stroked over her cheeks. A tongue whisked across Rio’s lips, and Agatha’s eyes followed it like it was the north star. Death was creeping up her bones, she could feel it, draining her not of life—but of anger, of fury. Giving her permission to finally let it go.
Her greatest fear had arrived, and it looked like the most beautiful woman she’d ever held.

“See, that's the thing.” Rio's voice took on an oddly gleeful tone. “I can't kill anyone right now. I quit.”
That got Agatha's attention. Her head snapped up, eyes narrowing as she took in Rio's appearance. Death looked... different. Still draped in her usual black attire, but there was something more solid about her presence. More... mortal.
“You what?”
“Quit! Resigned. Took early retirement. Put in my two weeks' notice, whatever. Except I didn't actually give notice, I just stopped showing up.” Rio beamed.
In which Death retires.

Agatha just looks at her.
“Okay, fine, but I’m not telling you.” Death pouts, Agatha has learned. It’s truly the silliest thing.

She settles into one of the chairs in the living room, feeling the spell leak into her. She almost likes this. This mind-bending, forget-what’s-important reality she finds herself in. How easy life would be if this is all they were: two women with no past, no future past the season finale, just a pizza and some beer and a case about a dead girl in the woods. How utterly fucking boring.

Something coils around her, black velvet and petrichor, the unmistakable scent of one who’s experienced Death. Rio thinks she would have remembered if she’d encountered a woman such as this before – those curves, that pouty mouth – so this is not one of those near-death-experience victims she hates so much. No, this absolute goddess has the look of someone who has killed.
Tasty, Rio thinks, and parts the crowd with a wave of her hand so she can get closer.
