“Just go easy on him, please,” had been the heart of his request. “He's not used to this type of thing.”
“What type of thing's that, son? Meeting the parents?” Jonathan had asked, with a wry chuckle. They'd met Bruce before, of course, although the wide majority of those occasions had actually been as Batman. This would be their first time seeing him, though, since he and Clark had started dating, and certainly his reputation in his personal life preceded him, even if they knew better than to believe all the things the tabloids wrote about him.
But Clark's expression had turned soft, and a little pained. “Uh,” he'd said, rubbing his neck. “Parents in general, I think.”

“How’s the city?” Clark asks.
It’s an innocent question in order to inspire conversation. He’s asked Bruce the same one multiple times in the past. Usually, he grunts out a simple affirmative that he heard it, or that it’s fine. If Clark needs to know any details, it’s because he’s helping Bruce with an aspect of his work. Yet here, on a night such as tonight, Bruce’s eyes close for a moment to steady himself.
Clark brings over a slice of rhubarb pie.

Six months.
It wasn’t even a fight that ended it. Bruce had just looked at him one day and said, “We need to focus on the mission. This is a distraction we can’t afford.” There’d been other things, too, each more untrue than the last, but that was all Clark had needed to hear.
And Clark had let him get away with the lie, young and in love and afraid of losing all of Bruce. He didn’t feel he was left with another option if he wanted even a shadow of the forever he’d pictured.

Or: Bruce and Clark were together once, briefly, a long time ago. A life time later, they wonder if they might have the opportunity to try it again.
