Samira Mohan doesn’t lose- Well, except maybe to anyone coached by Jack Abbot. The infuriatingly composed legend is responsible for every professional defeat on her record.
So when she’s knocked out of Wimbledon by a 17 year-old, coached by Jack, of course- Samira thinks it can’t get worse. Then he’s named head coach of Team USA for the Paris Olympics.

And yeah, Hazel knew it was self-defense - as did the judge who didn’t really seem to believe that a gaggle of teenage lesbians and their miscellaneous straight girl sidekicks actually murdered people - but the eerie silence that trailed after her every time she walked down the hallway was starting to drive her crazy.
And then, about two weeks after the game, PJ showed up at her house in the middle of the night and didn’t say a single word before kissing her, and they didn’t talk about that either. Hazel, the fucking idiot that she was, just let it happen. Every time PJ texted that she was at the front door - or, in a genuine feat of athleticism, crawled in through her second-floor bedroom window - Hazel would just smile in spite of herself and kiss her hard enough to bruise.
It worked for them. It was fine.
OR: Hazel and PJ manage to make fame a competition.

read this back in 2021 and this is still one of my top three fics ever. i still have not felt a full rollercoaster of emotions than i do with you wait and you wonder, even with published novels. i've racked up more than 700 bookmarks and highlights but if i could, i'd just highlight the entire book. god.
benny watts is so "from eden" coded, so "i slithered here from eden just to sit outside your door", all of that yearning and longing inside a pirate/cowboy costume. he LOVES her and the best thing a man can do is love his wife <3 they're so "false god" "cowboy like me" "you are in love" "new year's day" coded. crying so hard snot is dripping down my face.
speaking of, i have the softest spot for women who don't know how to love so they don't understand or realize that they are and so they destroy all potential means of happiness until they come to the realization of who and why they're happy, and then goes home (metaphorically or physically) to the person who has always wanted them, known them, loved them.
beth harmon is so 22 and angst-ridden, wanting to be loved, wanting to love, but not knowing how. she is so "this is me trying" coded. screaming crying AND throwing up. she's perfect and he's perfect (he knows her, he KNOWS her). love was dead but these dysfunctional chess rivals brought it back.
paperclipbitch you will ALWAYS be famous.
sidenote: ao3 says i read this 50+ times. i don't doubt it.
