A conversation with your best friend who you're convinced is the love of your life.
Was the love of your life. There was no life left for Kaveh anymore, and he'd spent his golden years thinking that was as unlucky as he would ever get. He had enough regrets to fill up the suitcase he'd brought from Snezhnaya — a life's worth of hypotheticals and logical fallacies. While grief gnawed at him as a teenager, as an old man, it now consumed him from the inside.
Or: the Withering that destroyed Kaveh’s magnum opus also pulled his life away, transforming him into a vampire. Seventy years later, he returns to Sumeru.

He takes a moment to inspect the door carefully. It looks just the same as it always has – no strange contraptions or tricks that might harm him – and so he slowly, carefully brings his hand up to touch the wood. His fingertips go right through it, as if it were never there at all.
He feels just a little sick. Despite that, he takes a deep breath and walks through.

kaveh wakes up incorporeal and unable to communicate, trapped in their house with a despondent alhaitham. it's up to him to figure out why he's like this (and how he can go back to normal).

Summary
Kaveh stood next to Alhaitham, far too close to be proper, and quietly, as a secret shared between friends, looped his pinky finger around his. The touch was fleeting, the briefest—and greatest—of comforts before pulling away. Alhaitham wanted to scold him for the touch. He wanted to clasp the prince’s hand even tighter. He could do neither.
A prince unfit for his crown. A librarian with a singular wish: to protect the sanctity of his peaceful life. The unrequited yearning of his heart was meant to be his only struggle. When the prince’s life is threatened though, our librarian finds himself at a crossroads: stay safe in his quiet anonymity, or rise to ambitions he never sought.

Summary
Kaveh jolted awake with an immediate, jarring sense that the world was somehow incorrect - the way a loud alarm jerks someone into consciousness before they’re ready to rejoin the waking world. As his eyes flew open, he took in the familiar ceiling of his and Alhaitham’s home... but that only made his unease worsen.
Blinking rapidly, he pushed himself upright with a clumsy lurch, oddly disconnected from his own body - as though his limbs had forgotten their obedience to the structure of his mind. But as he rolled his shoulders, expecting the familiar discomfort and stiff cracks he’d long since accepted as an inevitable consequence of waking up every morning, all he felt was warm, smooth muscle moving fluidly beneath his skin.
A lot of muscle.
... Too much muscle.
Why was there so much muscle?!

Summary
Alhaitham inhaled deeply before submerging his face, cursing himself for having seemingly abandoned his usual rationality. His eyes crinkled as he tried to open them.
Open them he did, and the sight was… dazzling. The siren was an undeniable beauty on land, with his hair stuck to the nape of his neck and droplets dotting his torso, but underwater, the swirl of a light current dancing through his hair and the shimmer of his jewelled eyes fully brought his features to life. Gorgeous, Alhaitham thought, and he didn’t realise his eyes were widened until they started to burn from the salt.

Maybe him wasn’t the right word, he realized as he turned the prone body over. Bits of gravel skittered across the ground like fleas. Dirt clung to its damp clothes and silver hair, wetted by the evening drizzle.
Of all the things Kaveh expected to run into today, a broken, hyperrealistic android was not one of them.
In the corner of a run-down alleyway, Sumeru's most renowned robotics engineer discovers an android. And this is no ordinary android—Kaveh has never seen one that looks so disturbingly human. When it becomes clear fate is giving him no other option, he brings it home for a repair.
There is more than meets the eye with this android. That much is obvious. Then Kaveh learns of a series of mysterious disappearances, and realizes there is even more to this strange creation than he—or its creator—thought.

And now the desert is in danger, Al-Haitham ponders grumpily. He is surely safe, and I'm positive we will find him in time.
The peace is, however, short-lived. "A-Acting Grand Sage, th-the desert… it is under attack."
(Premise set in Sumeru while the Abyss war of Natlan Chapter 5 Act IV is going on)

What started out as any normal day suddenly takes a turn as Alhaitham comes down with a headache. Something as mundane as resting turns into a frightening alternate reality. He knows his roommate better than anyone, but not this version. A reality where they never came together again, never became friends, and never roommates. Someone else has Alhaitham's role now and with no one to turn to in this world, how is he to pick up the pieces?
Meanwhile, Kaveh is struggling to find a way to bring back Alhaitham to reality. Back to their shared home. Their friends join in, racing against an invisible clock set up by some that wish to see Alhaitham never wakes up.

Summary
“You’re drunk,” he accuses, barely believing it even as the words leave his mouth.
Alhaitham never gets drunk to the extent that Kaveh can smell it on him. Ever. But it’s as clear as day in the way he’s holding himself, the way his eyes struggle to focus, the flush on his cheeks, the smell of his breath.
Kaveh is the one person in Sumeru City who is most likely to be able to call someone’s bluff when they’re hiding intoxication, so the fact that Alhaitham shakes his head stubbornly at the accusation almost makes him want to laugh. It would have made him laugh if it didn’t make him want to cry.
Everyone has a limit to how far they can stretch themselves, and going beyond that limit has serious consequences. Alhaitham doesn't tend to approach that limit very often, which makes it all the more dangerous when he's pushed past it.
