“Mydei! There you are.”
His eyes flutter, no longer half-lidded, staring at the source of that familiar voice. “Deliverer.”
Phainon nods, not the slightest bit put off by his gruff greeting, casually petting Kokopo’s side.
Mydei inhales deeply, trying to push the haze back, suppressing a growl when Phainon’s scent fills his nose instead. It’s distinct against the whirl of grey all around, sharp and warm – sweet oranges and heady bergamot, flares of ozone and a pang of seasalt. Locating him anywhere was as simple as following that golden trail he left behind no matter where he went.
He swallows, hard. His throat bobs. His teeth ache. He steels his jaw, curls his brass claw into his own arm to distract himself from the heat flaring up in his stomach.
“What do you want?” Mydei asks, voice rougher than usual.
Mydeimos plans on dealing with his rut as he always has: by ignoring it. Phainon's infuriatingly alluring scent throws a wrench in those plans, and Mydeimos finds himself struggling to resist his instincts more than ever.

Summary
Okhemopolis’s golden boy Deliverer has limits. Phainon just… hasn’t really bothered to find them yet, but apparently alcohol is a good place to start. What begins as a mildly irresponsible experiment turns into a problem, because for the first time since he started obsessively tracking it, Phainon can’t hear Mydei’s heartbeat across the city. Which would be fine. Totally fine. If he weren’t absolutely, catastrophically attached to it.
So he does the reasonable thing: calls the man and asks him to come over. Just until the alcohol wears off. Just so Phainon can hear him again. Losing one sense, though, means Phainon ends up noticing a lot of other things he's been very good at ignoring until now.
Or: Superman/Phainon gets drunk, loses his heartbeat-tracking superhearing, panics, and accidentally discovers that having Batman/Mydei right next to him might be significantly worse for his self-control.

Summary
It was a cultural miscommunication. The product of a cultural difference. Phainon was certain of it. After all, Phainon had hardly been aware of the implications when he first arrived in Okhema. It wasn’t until he attended a class on Okheman theatre at the Grove and they were halfway through analysing a play script from Era Bellica that he was exposed to the symbolism for the first time.
The girl next to him had taken pity and timidly whispered the answer to his question.
Throwing apples was a ploy at seduction.
By the way Mydei happily crunched at the apple perfectly matched to the one he had thrown with every intention for Phainon to catch, and the lack of scandalised attention from the surrounding Kremnoans, tossing apples clearly did not carry the same meaning in Kremnos as it did in Okhema.
A cultural difference over apples leads to some self-inflicted torture on Phainon’s behalf. After all, if Mydei is ignorant to the symbolism then there’s no harm to Phainon indulging in a little fantasy.

Summary
The problem with Phainon is that—well. There's actually no problem with Phainon, if you discount the fact that he works six days a week and spends his single day off being on-call; his intertwining savior-hero-martyr complex (according to Cyrene); his ugly rusted beat-up truck (according to Hyacine); his general demeanor and boring lifestyle (according to Cipher).
In which Phainon has an ethical crisis.

Summary
For a moment, all Mydei does is stare. He wants to see Phainon drop that veneer of professionalism. He wants to see what Phainon's real laugh looks like. He wants to see Phainon, truly see him without all the shine and glamour obscuring his vision.
Slowly, deliberately, so that his intentions can't possibly be misread, Mydei says, "If you have nowhere else to be, you could come over to my place."
Or, Phainon is the Flame-Chase's top-rated host, five consecutive years and counting, and Mydei can't seem to keep his eyes off him.
