OR: Ilya's teammates go with him to visit Hollander at the hospital and a high-on-painkillers Shane can't keep his mouth shut. Ilya learns that when it comes down to it, ice is thicker than blood.

“I’m trying to figure out,” Rose wonders aloud. “Are you always a complete prick? Just with women? Or just when you lose a game?”
Ilya barks a laugh, shocked and almost delighted, and his smile spreads wide enough that Rose can see all those pearly whites of his that are so much nicer than she expected any hockey player’s to be. “All the time,” he grins, “all the time. However much of an asshole Hollander has told you I am, double it.”
She answers truthfully, shrugs her shoulders in her tiny silver dress. “He hasn’t mentioned you at all.”
After a shitshow of an evening in a Montreal nightclub, Ilya wakes up the next morning in Shane’s bed. Only, he’s not in Shane’s bed — Rose Landry is, and he’s in Rose Landry’s body, and she’s in his. Well, what the fuck are they supposed to do with that?

Crashing the fuck out
While he’s still parsing what she’s said, his phone vibrates against his ear with a message sent from Sunny, from Ilya’s phone. A screenshot of a different conversation, two brief texts intended for him.
Jane: I caught the post-game highlights. That was an amazing goal in the second.
Jane: You’re still my favorite player to watch.
Never in his life, even when he’d just moved to a foreign country with maybe four sentences worth of fluency, has Ilya felt so stupid or naive. There are universes beyond what he could have imagined existed, magical realms and possibilities, minds and bodies traded and worlds he can’t believe, and still, in not a single one of them, is there a version of Ilya that can give Shane Hollander everything he needs. Not in his old life, where Shane left him; not in this new life, where Shane’s evidently still stuck on someone he won’t let himself have. Not in any future and not in any magnitude of fantastical outcomes.
Ilya Rozanov will never, ever be enough.
“Delete them,” Ilya says. “Don’t respond.”

Ilya understands, wearily, what Shion is getting at. Yuna is not alone in the world, Shane is not alone in the world. You are telling me that you are there for them, that you are watching for them.
I know this. And that is a lovely thing. But I am one of those people you mentioned. Alone in the world. “Okay. I understand.”
