He was walking to his Jeep when the stench of cigarette smoke hit his nose. A few feet away, a tall, broad shouldered figure was standing, back to Shane, watching the sunset. Propped against the wall next to him was the bi-pride flag emblazoned sled.

“That was a great game.” Shane said, taking a couple steps in the direction of the sledge hockey center. “You’re an amazing player to watch, but you’re really not supposed to smoke here.” The man stiffened and then pivoted slowly towards Shane. Backlit by the setting sun, his facial expression was indiscernible.

“Oh my God Hollander, you are so boring.”

    Ilya was dead.

Or at least, Alexei Rozanov said he was. Even after two years, Shane still hoped to see him again. He never imagined reuniting in the parking lot of a community center in suburban Ottawa.

A family emergency means Ilya and Shane never meet in Las Vegas. In Russia, Alexei uncovers Ilya's sexuality and attacks him, inflicting grievous injuries. Ilya escapes with his life, but is forced into hiding, seeking refugee status in Canada where he builds a quiet, but meaningful, existence.

The only problem: even two years later, he misses Shane Hollander.

    “Shane, honey, what happened?”

Shane inhales sharply, his breath hitching. “That house next door to you? The one that was just sold?”

“What about it?” Yuna asks, unable to tell where the conversation is going.

Usually, Shane is one of the easiest people to read on planet earth. He wears his heart on his sleeve, even though he typically doesn’t intend to, and it’s one of her favorite things about him. Now, though, she’s at a loss, and she finds that she kind of hates the feeling.

“Your new neighbor is Ilya Rozanov."

David never catches them at the cottage. Months later, Ilya moves to Ottawa. Yuna figures it out as she goes.

    Summary

“Did, uh,” Frankie starts. She sounds faint. “Did you just say your boyfriend?”

Ilya’s stomach drops. Oh. Oh, fuck.

He doesn’t know what his face does. There will probably be pictures of this moment all over the internet by tomorrow morning. He doubts it’s flattering, considering there’s a non-zero chance he’s going to throw up all over the microphone.

Ilya scrambles. Too tired, too shocked at his own brain’s betrayal to know how to fix this. “Blyat,” he spits. Then he laughs, and even he can hear that it sounds more wild than genuine. “English language is hard, yes? I meant my boys, my boys who are my friends. The Centaurs, yes? They are all my boy friends.”

Ilya Rozanov has a no-good, very bad two days and accidentally outs himself. He's not having a great time.

    Summary

The realization hit Ilya like a body check. They weren’t just evacuating for a fire, they were in the middle of a hotel, full of Ottawa players and hockey fans. Shane let go of Ilya’s hand. He turned to look at his boyfriend and that’s when he noticed what Shane was wearing. A black Centaurs hoodie with the bright red letters and numbers printed on the back: Rozanov 81. Ilya was sure Shane hadn't noticed what he was wearing, but he had pulled the drawstrings of the hoodie tight, leaving a small a hole at the center of his flushed face.

The rookie, clearly starstruck, stared. “Are you Shane Hollander? Like, the Shane Hollander?” Ilya wasn’t sure who was going to faint first, Shane or Luca.

The others stood there staring at the two men, mouths slightly agape. Bood broke into a slow smile. “Nice hoodie, Hollander. Supporting the enemy now?"

...oh,” his mom says. “Oh, honey, you were seeing someone? You never said anything.”

“It’s-it’s complicated.” He catches the present tense too fucking late to do anything about it, and he barely resists the urge to either groan or slip forward to start beating his head against the coffee table.

    Fuck his fucking life.

“You’re still…seeing this person?” His mom asks, and the amount of control he can hear her exerting is almost painful. “Who is-”

“Yuna,” his dad cuts in, voice quiet, “maybe give him a second, yeah?”

Yeah, Shane agrees in his head. Give him a second.

Maybe give him a decade while they’re at it.

(when shane's old fake id falls out of his wallet around his parents, he has to explain that it was to book hotel rooms before he was 21)

(...and then he has to explain why he needed to book those hotel rooms in the first place)
