“Damn. I guess I’ll cheat, then.” Peter sharpens the cue stick, striding around the table. He gets a reluctant laugh from Jon, not because of his words, but how drolly he delivered the threat.
“Don’t you dare.” He swirls the liquid remaining inside of the glass. It gleams like molten gold. “Besides, it doesn’t matter. We didn’t wager anything.”
“Should we have?”
Peter is standing too close. Jon tilts his head back. “No. If we were playing for keeps, I would have cleaned you out five rounds ago. Bad form to trounce your hosts who also happen to be your donors, isn’t it?”
“Careful, Archivist. You’re growing on me.”

For all the Watcher’s… passive proclivities, it’s old. Very old. And demanding of what it wants. Something you’re beginning to understand.”
Jon soldiers on through another wave of nausea. “A-and Elias? You’re going to run this idea of yours through him?”
“Pet, that’s going to be half the fun of this." Peter smirks delightedly. "Elias doesn’t get a say in this. He only gets to watch.”
