“It was too late,” John hears himself whisper again. He’s slumped against the car door. His side aches and he feels blood leaking onto his shirt. “If they’d called sooner, then maybe... but it was too late. It was too late when we got there.”
He takes a flask of whiskey out of his coat, tipping it back. He just has to make it back to the millhouse. Then he can lock himself away and drink until he can’t see straight. Part of him knows he should tell Chas and Zed he's injured, but another part of him, the part that rears its ugly head on nights like this, thinks the pain feels right. Pain grounds him, stops his head from spinning, and it’s not like he doesn’t deserve it.
