Summary
Under the bright glare of electric lighting, the finer details are already starting to fade. Faces, voices. The shape of each person and how many there were to begin with. Trees and snow and a dark sky hanging low overhead, cold mud trampled underfoot, all of it unraveling like a tapestry being unpicked until only the raw emotion of it is left.
Rage. Anger. Longing.
Grief, like nothing he’s ever known.
The cold water on his face helps a little, the shock of it taking some of the sharpest edges off, but even then, it’s still enough to make Megumi want to fall to his knees from the sheer enormity of it. The feeling’s too much to hold inside his chest – it’s pressing up against his ribcage and crowding all around his heart, tight enough to choke. He would scream, if only he could stop sobbing for air.
Something’s been taken from him.
He’s lost it somehow, and even though he doesn’t have a name for it, doesn't know what or even who it is anymore, at the centre of it lies the glimpse of a truth that’s already retreating back into the dark:
Megumi will do anything to get it back.

Summary
So here’s something funny:
The thing is, despite everything – who they are and who they’re supposed to be, where they are and where they’re going – Higuruma’s been known to look up the legal process for abdication every now and then.
It’s more of a habit than anything at this point. A thought experiment at worst and muscle memory at best, with no actual meaning attached behind it. Higuruma can already recite the procedures by heart anyway, which makes the document on-screen more for show than utility, but there's something….comforting, maybe, about having it open all the same.
Like knowing where to buy a gun, or how to tie a knot in a certain way even if he also knows he’ll never actually pull the trigger, never take the step. Maybe just the knowledge that he could will suffice.

Indeed, here is one now. Only a mere pup of a thing – a child, as the humans say in their clumsy language. Sukuna lets his feet dangle from the boulder he’s seated on. Peers down at the one audacious enough to speak to him, the first in a millenia.
How to even start? Where to even begin?
“I am what I am required to be,” Sukuna says slowly. “The wind that lifts a goshawk’s wing in flight. The crush of grass under a fox’s foot.” He leans forward now, all the better to see the boy standing so small and brave before him. “I am sharpened claw and bloodstained fang. The beat of a racing heart and the snap of bone between teeth, the first rush of blood and the final breath.”
God of hunger. God of the hunt.
True god of war, before there were humans to ever wage it.
“Oh,” says the child when Sukuna finally falls silent. His eyes are a clear, brilliant green – the colour of horsetails that grow by the water in spring. “I see. But surely you have a name.” And after that, like this is some inane exchange: “Mine is Megumi.”

Hawks has to laugh. Even now, at the end of all things, trust Mera to ask a question like this and mean it. “I don’t think we have time to go into that, unfortunately.”
There it is again, that sadness. Hawks hates it. Hawks wants to crack Mera open and scoop it right out of him, entire fistfuls that leave him hollowed out and ready to be filled with warm things, with sunlight.
All the things that Mera is giving him instead.
“It’ll be quick,” Mera says at length. “Won’t even feel it.”
