“What is it?” Thomas asked, worried.

    “They…” Vincent sighed.

“Don’t worry, I’ll read it. I have a lot to say.” Aldo turned towards the screen and back towards his small audience, seeming to steel himself somewhat. “The workplace relationship is, of course, the two of you. Yes, we know. We have known for at least four months…”

“What's that on your desktop, Thomas? Do you have a photo of me?”

Such a simple question, yet it fills Thomas with a deep sense of dread.

It's Aldo's turn to use his local homosexual friend as a source of relationship advice.

(Or: Neither Aldo, Thomas, or Vincent are 100% sure what they're doing. They make it work anyway.)

The creature suppressed the victorious smile on its face. For centuries, it did not demand a sacrifice. The island had reaped and received its benevolence freely. Surely, the Church would not mind if it took one of its holy men—a fair exchange for the prosperity that it brought.

    Summary

In the morning, the cardinals sweep into the Vatican in a wave of crimson, like blood spreading from a wound. As they split up into smaller groups, chuckling and shaking hands and lighting each other’s cigarettes, a small stream of nuns criss-crosses through the courtyard to take their bags. Most of the cardinals barely look at them.

Just as a nun is supposed to, Sister Theresa stays quiet. That does not mean she's powerless.
