Summary
"It's a big thing," Sciel says, conversationally. "Having one. It changes the shape of everything. Pierre, Lune, and I—we talked about it for a long time before. It still managed to surprise us, how much." She glances at him. "Do you ever think about it?"
The question lands lightly. That is the thing about Sciel—she puts things down rather than pressing them in. Verso is aware, not for the first time, that this is probably what makes her so effective at interrogations like these.
"I think Gustave has found his way to something that works," he says, which is not an answer to the question she asked, and they both know it. "He's not—wanting for anything. He's got more than enough people in his life who need him."
Sciel makes a small sound. Not disagreement, exactly.
"What," Verso says.
"Nothing." A pause. "I'm just—thinking about what 'enough' means,” she looks at him sideways, "and I think you're avoiding the question."In which two people who had stopped expecting things discover, somewhat belatedly, that they want the same one.

Summary
Gustave awoke to the gray light of early morning and Verso crouched beside the bed, two fingers wrapped around his wrist.
"What," Gustave managed, "are you doing."
"Your heart rate was elevated during sleep," Verso said, matter-of-factly. "Irregular breathing patterns. I wanted to ensure you were not experiencing a medical emergency."
"I was dreaming," Gustave said, with extraordinary care. "People do that."
Verso's brow creased slightly. "Oh." A pause, and something moved through his expression that resolved before Gustave could name it. "My apologies. I have logged this for future reference." He did not let go of Gustave's wrist.
"You can let go now."
"Your pulse is still elevated."
"Because you startled me awake."
Verso stared at him, and for just a moment, something like annoyance flickered across his expression. In which Gustave comes across a destroyed android in the scrapyard. When VRS-0 wakes with no memory, neither of them are prepared for what comes next.

Summary
Then Verso felt it, a strange pulling sensation, not quite in his foot but through it. Like something was being drawn out of him, gentle and careful.
The sensation intensified, and Verso watched in fascination as faint tendrils of color—his color, the gold of his chroma—began to drift from his skin toward Monoco. It moved like ink in water, curling and flowing in patterns that shouldn't exist in the air but did anyway.
When the light faded, there was a man sitting in front of him.
A naked man holding Verso's foot with hands that were now flesh instead of wood, skin tanned and weathered and very, very warm.
"Holy shit," Verso breathed.
In which a lazy afternoon leads to new discoveries.
Or; Monoco transforms into a human using Verso's chroma for the first time, and then they fuck about it. -

Summary
Another pause. Then: "Verso, do you know anything about Gestral biology?"
"I…" Verso tried to think through the fever-haze. "You're painted. Wood and… metal. Given life by the original Verso's brush."
"And?"
"And... I don't know. I never really thought about it." Shame crept through him. "Why?"
"Because Gestrals have designations just like you humans do," Monoco said quietly.
The words landed like stones. Verso stared at him, mind struggling to process what that meant.
"You have—" He couldn't finish.
"Verso… defaulted all of us to Alpha," Monoco continued, and there was something raw in his voice now. "Every Gestral."
Oh.
Oh gods.
In which Verso's heat suppressants run out, forcing him to confront feelings he thought were impossible.
Or; Monoco helps Verso through his heat.

Summary
Rook swallowed hard. "I can’t believe—" He dropped his gaze, the floor blurring. "So much happened. I don’t know how to feel."
Lucanis stepped closer, sinking to his knees in front of him. His eyes were full of warmth and something so achingly gentle it almost hurt to see. The Demon of Vyrantium, kneeling here, with no hint of the ruthless killer he was known to be.
"I do," he whispered.
He leaned in, and Rook reached without thinking, his palm fitting against the curve of Lucanis' jaw. The warmth of his skin grounded him, a steady pulse beneath his fingers. He tasted of coffee, something sharp and bitter, and Rook found he didn't mind at all.

Summary
The feeling came suddenly. A cold pull behind his ribs, curling around his spine.
Escher halted mid-step, a slow breath slipping past his lips. A summons. It was not spoken aloud, but he felt it all the same. A command that left no room for disobedience.
Lord Strahd was calling him.
