Summary
And Hakoda wondered how his heart could still beat. How he was able to continue living when Bato could not. How he could enjoy the era of peace knowing his love had not survived the war.
(Little did he know, things were not as they seemed.)

Summary
Of course, it’s Katara who brings it up, ever the romantic that she is. It’s the evening, with the bulk of the day’s work done, the remainder being tomorrow’s problem, and Hakoda is sitting in front of the fire in his home, enjoying a pleasant conversation with his daughter while they wait for Bato to return from his work, when Katara, suddenly and without preamble asks, “So when are you and Bato getting married?”

Summary
Day 4 - Love Languages
When the wind howls outside and the children are asleep there is no room for words. When in the middle of battle, shouts and weapons clashing all around them, there is no quiet for words. When enemy ships are on the horizon or enemy guards are pulling them apart to different prisons there is no time for words.

Summary
Hakoda couldn’t deny he was glad for some space, some time alone with his best friend if he let himself just listen to the wind and waves in the distance, feel the content fullness of a good dinner in his stomach, enjoy the dissipating scent of meat cooking in the smoke of the fire. The very last light of the day was disappearing from the cliff face above them, painting Bato in the warm orange glow of the fire, silhouetting his profile.
//
Bato and Hakoda enjoy rare alone time.

Summary
Zuko is just trying to survive Boiling Rock prison. He didn't make it out on time on the Day of Black Sun and frankly, he's lucky to be alive. His escape attempts have proven futile and he doesn't have any allies to speak of here. His best bet is keeping his head down and trying to survive.
Sokka is just here to break his dad out. It's his fault his dad was captured and he needs to fix this. His plan is working well enough so far; he's made it here, he's disguised as a guard, no one suspects him, now he just has to find his dad and get out.
Blue eyes meet gold. A flash of recognition. Shit just got a whole lot more complicated.

Summary
"You think I hate you? You think I'd ever kill you?" Sokka holds Zuko's face in both hands, blood dripping from his lips. "I'd fall on my sword for you. I'd find you anywhere. What do you think that means?"
Rescued, but imprisoned, Zuko finds himself no further from death on a water tribe ship. Sokka, the chief, would see him bleeding out on the boards of the deck as justice. He's a fire bender, the evil of the war that his father rages through their world. Zuko hasn't been a part of that war. Not for years. Now he's thrust back into it against his will, finding himself fighting on a side he never expected to be a part of. Maybe he'll find a cause worth fighting for; someone worth fighting for.

Summary
As kids, Hakoda and Bato were the best of friends. They were inseparable. They coloured each other’s earliest memories, and filled the edges of stories that were retold over fires and meals for decades to come. For most among the Southern Water Tribe there is no one without the other, they were Hakoda-and-Bato and Bato-and-Hakoda for as long as those names were theirs.
Where the story starts depends on who's telling it: Bato and Hakoda, before, during and after the war.

Summary
Zuko felt his stomach tighten harder. Because he knew men like this. Even after all these years away from that world, he knew exactly what violence looked like when it became natural to someone. The eerie composure, cold eyes, Zuko had flashbacks about exactly how his father’s men looked.
The stranger stood a moment later, straightening his sleeves like nothing had happened. Then he looked toward him. His eyes, surprisingly, instantly softened. It was jarring.
“You okay?”
Zuko realized he was subconsciously gripping his daughter too tightly and loosened his hold immediately. “Yeah.” Izumi peeked over Zuko’s shoulder with huge eyes. The stranger, who was still pining the robber, crouched down slightly to be on her level.Zuko, a single father who has left his life of crime behind for the sake of his young daughter, finds himself unexpectedly drawn into a relationship with Sokka. Unbeknownst to him, Sokka is following his father’s orders to deceive and get close to him in order to eventually kill him. However, as Sokka begins to develop actual feelings towards Zuko, that forces him to choose between loyalty to his family and the man he was meant to betray.

Summary
There’s a small silence, before Sokka - naturally - interrupts it.
“I didn’t think the Fire Nation had rights for prisoners of war.”
“Well… yeah,” the Prince says, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world. “If we didn’t, my father would probably just execute everyone.”
“...Well, that’s lovely,” Bato says.
-----
The invasion goes a little differently than Sokka would have hoped: namely, he's sitting in a cell with the Prince of the Fire Nation, his hands are chained behind his back, and his shoulder is probably dislocated.
Oh, and it seems the universe hates him, because his dad can't even give him a proper hug. So yeah. He's doing great.

Summary
The man’s voice once again broke him from his thoughts; “In my dreams I see them tortured by Fire Nation soldiers. I see my entire culture wiped from the South, our footprint upon the ice shelves gone as though we never existed, our connection with the spirits and our ancestors forgotten.” He was silent for the briefest of moments, then, “You’re Fire Nation, aren’t you?”
Zuko rolled onto his side, facing the wall, scar pressed into the arm that cushioned his head. “Once, maybe.”
“Answer me this, then; when will this war see it's end?”
Zuko, recalling the fire that had burned in Azula’s sunlit gaze the day she’d caught up to him, chose not to respond.

Ozai just wished he would die already.
(Or: Zuko’s father meant for him to die at the Agni Kai, but the spirits have a different plan, one that Hakoda didn’t recall signing up for.)

Summary
“I’m supposed to be strong,” Zuko spits. “I’m a prince. I’m a man. I’m not supposed to break down because someone put a leash on me and told me I was theirs. I’m not supposed to like it.”
Sokka watches him tremble, the shame thick in his throat, and doesn’t look away. Doesn’t flinch. “So let me hold that too,”
or,
Zuko breaks in all the ways he’s never let himself—under Sokka’s hands, beneath his weight, on his knees. He craves the collar, the praise, the sting of spit on his cheek. But morning brings silence and shame, and he runs. Sokka follows. There’s no fixing this—but he’ll still stay.
