Her gaze lingered. Fount’s skin prickled. Truthless’ fingers stilled against his waist. The air thickened just from Truthless' side of the table.
Truthless exhaled sharply through his nose, grip tightening until the embroidery bit into Fount’s skin. “White Lily,” he said, low and warning. “We are not gambling for him.”

By the time he finally climbed the spiraling stairs to his chambers, his bones ached with the particular weariness of someone who had not slept properly in weeks.
He barely managed to change into his nightclothes before collapsing into the massive four-poster bed, its vanilla-scented linens enveloping him like a cloud. The candle beside his bed flickered once, twice, and then he was gone—drowning in a dreamless, merciful darkness.
