It’d been worse when they reached the clearing, though. When he’d seen the pillar standing proud in the centre of the green circle; rough stone, ancient and softened with lichen and moss. It had seemed almost organic, like it had grown from the dark earth. A heavy presence hung around it, reminding Martin oddly of church. So much emotion bled into the stone, ingrained in the grit of it. So much fear.
Every half-century, the good people of Hope must give one of their own away to the monster that dwells in the ancient woods bordering their village. This time, it's Martin's turn.

“You know what's funny?” Martin asks, and Jon looks up at him, dazed. “I don't, uh. I don't think I really need to breathe anymore? It just seems weird to give up the habit.” He laughs, but his eyes are tearing up a little again.
“You get used to it,” Jon says, bringing one of Martin's hands to his chest, the beating of his heart the only movement.
“Oh, good,” Martin says, and then it's like the drive up to Scotland, the both of them laughing because it's either do that or cry, curled in on each other and shaking. They end up in a heap on the floor, amid the lingering dust and the scattering of cleaning rags.

I'm sure given your position you already know about the advent of the General Data Protection Regulation next year, wrote Peter Lukas, to Elias Bouchard. However, the Lukas family wishes to be crystal clear that our continued investment is contingent upon the Institute taking its responsibilities with regards to privacy and confidentiality seriously.
The Magnus Institute hires a Data Protection Officer. He sets about diligently booking in meetings, writing policy documents, and training all the staff in the importance of confidentiality. Now if only he could get hold of the Head Archivist, who seems to have vanished again...
(Jon is only trying to save the world, but apparently some people think he should still be doing his day job.)
