Later, as everyone sat in the living room, empty Chinese boxes littering the coffee table, TV playing a trashy rom-com, Ilya came to a certain realization. It sat heavy in this throat, growing thicker with every swallow. So, he spit it out:
“I think Shane should move in.”
When Rose asked the house if her boyfriend could live with them, Shane Hollander was the last person Ilya expected. Canadian. Boring. Perfect. He even liked hockey with the same pride Ilya used to have. Strangely, Shane fit right into their hectic household, providing a level of stability Ilya didn't know they needed. Selfishly, he can't stay away from Shane, even if doing so meant betraying Rose—and himself.
Moving from the quiet suburbs of Canada to bustling NYC streets was a drastic change—especially for Shane. But to him, this was his chance to start over, leaving everything back in his hometown, including the sport he loved the most. All by himself, he'd got a girlfriend, a place to live, and a decent job. Had he done it? Abandoned that part of him, and locked it behind self-hatred and regret? The key Ilya Rozanov held screamed no.
