A figure brushed past Vi, interrupting her thoughts and making her finally look up. The girl Sevika had just called was taller than almost anyone else in her class, and Vi couldn’t believe she hadn’t noticed her until now. As the girl walked away to the other side of the gymnasium, back turned to her, Vi took in the long legs and the curve of her ass, lingering there for a second more before lifting her eyes to the midnight blue ponytail swaying with the movement of her steps.
Sheesh.

Vi's last year of high school starts off with the promise of being a shitty one. There's nasty rumors going around about the time she spent away, and there's this girl Vi doesn't remember who doesn't seem to like her. Mylo tries to make a bet with her. And there's rugby.

Summary
Professor Caitlyn Kiramman has spent ten years carefully cultivating her reputation as the university’s most terrifyingly professional professor: emotionally unavailable, painfully private, and absolutely not involved with the ridiculously charismatic Professor Vi Hund. Sure, they eat lunch together almost every day, disappear at the same time after faculty meetings but that means nothing. Obviously.
Unfortunately for Caitlyn, Vi’s students have the investigative abilities of the FBI and far too much free time.
So when one innocent question from a student turns into the horrifying realization that the entire campus already knows they’re married, Caitlyn is forced into a full-blown spiral while Vi finds the whole thing endlessly entertaining.

Professor Vi is kind of a mess but in a way her students secretly love. She overshares way too much, goes off-topic constantly, and treats her lectures more like conversations than actual classes. At this point, her students know way more about her life than they probably should.
But there’s one thing she’s never told them. The one thing she’s always kept to herself.
That is, until the day she brings her daughter to class.
What was supposed to be a normal break turns into chaos pretty fast. And yeah… there’s no undoing that.

“Say it again,” Vi all but begs. Her fingers dig into Caitlyn’s wrist and hip where she holds her close like she’ll float away in the ripples the wind makes in the grass, like the tide, like she isn’t Caitlyn’s anchor. Like she isn’t the only thing keeping Caitlyn afloat.
“Qīn’ài de. Oh, qīn’ài de. My dearest.”
Vi kisses her under the sunshine, the first time she’s felt it in years, and Caitlyn kisses back. Wind rustles through the trees, birds are singing, Caitlyn’s mom is dead, and she kisses Vi in the backyard she grew up in like she’s wanted to from the moment those bars between them slid open and Inmate 516 had a name again, a future again.
“Again,” Vi breathes. Their noses brush.
Caitlyn says it into her mouth as if Vi swallowing will keep it in her forever. “Qīn’ài de.”
(Or, it’s not just language. There's knowing and then there's understanding.)
