“The sun set a little while ago,” he replied, his distaste at divulging his weakness clearly stamped across his face. He diminished when she rose, and vice versa, their elements in fundamental conflict at all times.

Katara paced slowly, eyeing the cavern carefully, assessing it as a living space now rather than as an area solely to escape. “Right. Okay. So, we at least have a general idea of time. We’ll split the bread and eat half now, and hold onto the rest in case they don’t feed us regularly. We need to ration the water, so try to keep your sips shallow.”

Across the cavern, he just stared at her. She continued, “The area in the ceiling that they opened to drop down the food is the same spot where they dropped me through, so that might be where they always open it. We should watch that and confirm a pattern. In the meantime, I think we should set up our sleeping area as far from that as we can get, and definitely put our toileting spot as close to it as we can—”

“Excuse me, our what?” Zuko snapped.

    Summary

Zuko falls to Azula's lightning, and Katara realizes she doesn’t want him to die. She doesn’t want anyone to die, but she especially doesn’t want him to die. Sometimes she thinks he’s the only one who understands, when the others are laughing and goofing off. What it’s like to have to try to be fun, to remind yourself that you’re just a kid too.

(And how stupid and typical of him to die this way, sacrificing himself for her.)

There’s not much else to do (she knows, she’s considered anything else she could possibly do). Katara pushes up her sleeves and sets to work saving his life.

    Or

Katara heals Zuko after the Agni Kai and things go... wrong.

    Summary

Zuko has not known real peace since the day he faced his sister in the Last Agni Kai many years ago.

No matter how many times he tried to bury them, his feelings for a particular waterbender refused to fade. At every shared meal with the Gaang, every sparring match in a courtyard, and every visit to the Fire Palace, he found himself hoping, just once, that her eyes would meet his and reignite the spark that had flared the moment he took Azula's lightning for her... but they never did.

Her gaze always found Aang's instead. And, as time went on, Zuko taught himself to look away — for their sake, and for the fragile balance of their friendship. The Avatar and the healer, bound together as if by fate.

But when Katara comes to the Fire Nation during a quiet break from Aang, the Fire Lord begins to notice something he hadn't allowed himself to see before. Whenever he looked away...

    She always looked back.

    Summary

A messenger hawk practically fell from the sky and onto the deck. It croaked quietly in misery when a soldier scooped it up, its wings fluttering from exhaustion, feathers tipped in frost. The urgency that had driven the bird to fly beyond reason was immediately clear when the scroll was untied from its leg and slipped free from the oilcloth that had protected it from the elements – the wax seal of the head Fire Sage gleamed in the dying sunlight.

    **

“Dead.” Admiral Zhao stared at the scroll. The almost habitual smirk was gone from his face, and his expression was almost slack from the shock. “The Fire Lord is dead?”

    Summary

Ghosts and other psychic phenomena are real. Aliens are absolutely not.
It shouldn't bother her so much, then, that she'd put a dweeb called UAParadox in his place for insulting her gran online, Momo thought. He was just some loser with too much time on his hands.
    It didn't matter.
    It didn't!
And it really doesn't matter that - when she finally caves and apologizes for her behavior - he tells her he's watching clips from Gran's show on Bootube.
Or that he seems really kind. Surprisingly clever. And super attentive. And weirdly funny?

A few miles away, UAParadox sits in his dark room, utterly shocked and terrified and thrilled at the prospect of somehow making his first-ever friend.
He'll do absolutely anything for her.
