I was so thoroughly outside what you were expected to be, I hardly knew how to speak. Eventually I managed to get out something, because Cliopher looked at me with so much empathy I knew he understood.
My initial, slightly mad thought, was that the Moon Lady came down and assaulted someone at every lunar eclipse in the Vangaveye-ve. But no, if that had been true, Cliopher would have warned us, and the entire party would not have seemed surprised.

Cliopher nodded, satisfied. “Indeed, well-sorted.”
Kiri held up a finger to silence him. “And?”
There was a brief pause, before Gaudy gave an almost inaudible sigh and answered. “And who are flirting with Lord Mdang.”

Ludvic stirred his coffee. Rhodin peeled a banana in a desultory way. They waited.
Conju sighed. “It’s just–“ Ludvic and Rhodin leaned forward as Conju continued, “– why does he have to be underfoot all the time? Overnight?! I came down for a drink last week and nearly broke my neck tripping over a middle-aged aristocrat. It’s undignified.”

The Navy ship sailed into Gorjo City harbour on a lovely Monday afternoon. Everyone still remembered Aurelius Magnus coming to ask Elonoa'a to show him the way to Colhélhé. So even if they had little success, nobody resented the Navy trying to recruit. It was good to be remembered as seafarers.
It wasn't until dusk that rumours started flowing down from the Palace. And not in the chattering of children, or the smirks of young men. In the dark looks shared by the elders, and the whispers of servants to trusted messengers.
The Navy is to collect a special tithe. For the ascension of the new Emperor, Shallyr.

HR had promised that he would watch Kip the entire time he was up here, in this- picture frame, actually. It was a picture frame cut into the wall, with enough space for Kip to be displayed for HR's pleasure. The builders had framed the opening in an ornate (gaudy) gold trim, but the inset Kip was in was entirely white.
