Childe tilted his head in confusion, but still smiled broadly at him. “No? It’s time for dinner, xiansheng,” however, as he said so, his scent dulled a little, and as he asked: “Are you too tired? If so, I can see you home.”
Zhongli realized he must have made him worry, with how unbecomingly he was behaving. He couldn’t believe it, six-thousands years and the scent of an omega was able to distract him this badly.
“Not at all,” Zhongli said, hoping to disperse the unpleasant tension between them. “It was… just a particularly slow day at work.”
“If you say so,” Childe accepted his excuse easily, resorting to offer Zhongli one of his more honest smiles, "you can tell me more!”
Zhongli couldn’t help but feel a little charmed. “With pleasure.”

Zhongli could strut into any of those stores and buy whatever he wanted, but that kind of ostentatious flaunting of wealth was not his style—he preferred a quiet luxury. He invested in classics, in timeless quality, impeccable tailoring. Sometimes he indulged Ajax’s whims for something a little showy, of course. But, most of the time, it was understated—the fine leather shoes, the cashmere of his sweater, the rich sandalwood of his cologne.
And the crazy part—the really, truly crazy part, was that Zhongli wanted to share it all—the penthouse, the dinners, the clothes—with Ajax. As much as he enjoyed fine things, he drew far more pleasure in watching Ajax enjoy fine things. Golden eyes always filled with warmth as Ajax unwrapped a gift bag or enjoyed an exquisite meal—he didn’t need anyone to take care of him, but maybe that’s why Zhongli wanted to.

Summary
He was beginning to enjoy these moments of solitude. It was sunset, and Zhongli walked along the shoreline, feeling the wind flutter through his dark hair. He walked longer than he had before, far past where the boardwalk ended, and that’s when he saw him:
A man, lying halfway in the water. His upper body was jostled by the tide, but he seemed unable to move. Zhongli approached, not fully understanding what he was seeing until he was mere feet away and he couldn’t deny it any longer.
The man had a tail.
He did a double-take, but it did not vanish. He definitely had a tail. It was long and ended in a fin, the whole thing covered in near-iridescent azure scales, becoming more scarce as they reached his waist. It was a seamless transition from blue scales to creamy pale skin, lightly pinkened from the sun.
A shock of half-dry ginger hair contrasted the tail, and Zhongli took in the flush on his handsome face, even as his expression verged on murderous.
A…merman?
