Summary
In a world where vampires rule with what they deem to be a just system, vampire/human hybrids are rare, and they survive even more rarely. Simon is one of the few who reach the age of 25, which means he is going to live a long life. At that point, he's assigned a vampire handler whose job is to analyze and experiment on him.
His handler, Wilhelm, hates hybrids with a passion, but seeing Simon week after week starts making him intrigued.

His breath stutters. “Wilhelm,” he insists, voice cracking.
“Wilhelm,” Simon repeats. The name feels unfamiliar on his tongue like it’s a foreign language. “I’m not going. We can stay another day.”
The sheer relief that floods Wilhelm’s face is almost painful to look at. His eyes soften, his shoulders drop, the tight line of his mouth trembles for a second before it steadies into a small smile, his cheeks turning pink.
