Summary
Here in the light those eyes of his look real, staring Jacob down like a railgun locked on a target. Jacob’s never been much for religion or spent much time thinking about an afterlife. But being caught in the crosshairs of that cold, indifferent gaze sure raises the question about whether humans have a soul, and if they do, what happens to it when you die.
And if you can ever get it back.
The twists and turns of ME2, through the eyes of everyone but Commander Shepard.

Summary
A poker game on Omega goes awry. AKA, Kaidan and Joker walk into a bar on Omega and wind up on the run from the vorcha mafia over a bottle of whiskey and 5,000 credits.
Joker exhales. “Well, uh. I may have gotten us an invite to a backroom poker game at Afterlife.”
Kaidan rests his hands on his knees and eyes Joker warily. “Why would I want to play poker on Omega.”“You love poker!”
“On Omega? Are you kidding? They play poker with guns on Omega.”
Joker gestures to the arsenal at Kaidan’s feet. “Look at all the things you have in common.”

Peace does not extend to breakfast.
“You’re awfully quiet for someone who just put out such a magnificent spread.”
Kaidan waggles an eyebrow. “Resting on my laurels.”
Shepard knee stays at rest against his, and Kaidan leans a little more into it. The weight of it, the presence is…reassuring.
The sparrow that wings in from the roof and alights on Shepard’s stack of pancakes is less reassuring.

Garrus and Shepard share a moment of reflection.
“Can I ask you a question?”
Shepard holds up a finger, then swallows the rest of the whiskey like it’s a shot, smacking his lips and making a face. “Okay, go.”
“How much have you told Alenko about what happened while we were with Cerberus?”

Summary
Shepard grips the barrier rail, still looking straight ahead. “These people are tired. Tired people make mistakes. And…it only takes one.”
Something catches in her voice. It’s brief, another one of the things he might not have noticed in the beginning.
Oh.
Kaidan wonders if the maws on Akuze attacked at night. If she’d waited for the inevitable in the dark just like they are now…and who had been tired enough to make the mistake.

Summary
A few minutes more and they wouldn’t have even been on the ship. The Mako was scheduled and ready for drop, both of them suited up and ready with the final checklist completed.
A few minutes more, and they would have watched the Normandy burn from the surface of Alchera.
But they didn’t get those minutes.
Alchera, and the two year gap.
Follow up to Sonata.

“Alenko warned you about me, didn’t he?”
Tali nods sagely. “He told me that the best countermeasure for your dour and misanthropic demeanor is relentless charm.”
Of course he did. And leave it to Alenko to use words like misanthropic. Joker tugs on his cap. “Joke’s on him, I do not find you charming.”
“He also said to call you on your bullshit.”

Sam rubs at his arm. “You shouldn’t worry so much.”
Daniel gazes down at him, still all knees and elbows, a buck twenty centimeters tall if he’s wearing shoes, ready to fight god for no reason other than to have something to do.

Summary
Kaidan takes one for the team to save movie night.
“This better be as good as you say,” Shepard grumbles. “I’ve got shit to do.”
“No you don’t,” Kaidan replies.
Shepard’s glare could wilt steel, but Kaidan’s right, so the threat is empty. If only the Alliance brass knew how petulantly the Butcher of Torfan could pout.
“Also,” Kaidan cautions, queuing up the movie and kissing any sense of peace he might ever have again in his life goodbye, “I never said it was good. I cannot state that clearly enough. All I said is it’s one of a kind.”

Summary
Sam and Kaidan do a little unexpected Skygazing on Eletania.
Kaidan exhales in relief and rolls onto his back beside Shepard, staring up at the sky. It’s blue and serene, the dusty haze of Eletania’s ring sweeping through it like a starfield. One of the most beautiful things he’s ever seen. A laugh spills out of him.
“Fuck. I thought you were dead. Again.”
“Yeah,” Shepard says with a chuckle of his own. “Me too.”
Kaidan puts a shaking hand to his faceplate, apparently not done laughing. “Why do you always have to touch stuff?”
“I’m sorry, who had to go lick the beacon on Eden Prime?”
“That was professional curiosity.”

Summary
"Virmire, right.” Ashley skims Shepard’s abandoned datapad. “Sunny, beaches, great weather, missing prothean beacons. It sounds like shore leave. Surely nothing to fear there.”
Kaidan shifts in his seat. The last time they’d gone to paradise, Shepard had nearly gotten killed trying to save Kaidan from his own mistakes, and they’d discovered a race of genocidal machines trying to wipe out all sentient life, with a turian Spectre as their flag bearer.
“Nothing to fear at all,” he mutters.
The storm is coming, and it’s on Virmire.

Summary
“If we had the choice. To do whatever we want. To make…us whatever we want. What do you dream it would be?”
Kaidan presses his nose against Shepard’s neck, the ever-present knot in his chest tightening a little. Imagining a future with Shepard is something Alchera taught him not to twist into too sharp a focus. Better to just let the idea of it lurk in the back of his mind, a hope that exists on his periphery but never takes shape.
Doesn’t mean it doesn’t anyway, in quiet moments before the shuttle slips free of the Normandy, in between hands of poker when laughter makes him long for more, at night with Shepard curled in his arms, in the space between consciousness and sleep.
Yeah. He thinks about it.
Post-Leviathan snuggles.

Summary
Whatever Kaidan had been expecting from the Butcher of Torfan, this isn’t it.
There’s nothing krogan-like about the soldier sitting at the table. The lethal gaze from the vids is watery and unfocused. The empty bottle in his hand isn’t a gun, but he clutches it like one. When the bartender delivers a fresh one Shepard doesn’t look up, merely pops the top off and takes another quick pull.
This isn’t good.

A series of winter prompts, starting with the Great Hot Chocolate War. Tooth-rotting fluff as far as the eye can see.
~
Shepard smiles a tender smile, which dissolves into a fiendish grin when he presses the backs of his knuckles to Kaidan’s cheek. Kaidan yelps in dismay and jerks away.“How are your hands so cold?”
The grin gets bigger and more shit-eating. “Now you know how it feels, Mr. Necromancy hands.”

Summary
Kaidan has a reckoning with the Butcher of Torfan.
Suit alarm. Another blood pressure alert.
Kaidan immediately queries his HUD for an update on Shepard’s vital signs. Pulse 116. Respiration twenty-two breaths per minute. Given the exertion required to walk into Sharjila’s headwinds on a shattered ankle, those numbers aren’t concerning. But Shepard’s systolic pressure has been dropping slow and steady over the last hour, and his body temperature is three tenths lower than last check.
A harsh gale laced with silicate batters their shields, triggering anew the flare, hiss, and inevitable overload alert. It’s happening quicker now, too. Too much sand. Too much grit. It’s a constant tax on a system not designed for this kind of sustained assault.
But that’s the least of their worries.

Summary
Mixing business with pleasure, Citadel DLC style.
Aka, I took a screenshot and things got real fluffy real fast.
The next time Kaidan catches Shepard's eye something softens in his face, and the corner of his lip turns up in a smile Kaidan spent two years after Alchera trying not to think about. The somersault in his stomach definitely makes it feel like a date, rather than an attempt to figure out who else hates Shepard enough to try and assassinate him over sushi.
