Summary
It wasn’t a guarantee of anything, knowing your soulmate’s name. January had known a woman in ballet school who had gone on dates with no fewer than eighteen different Katherines, none of them right. And once you had the right Katherine, it wasn’t automatic bliss. A soulmate wasn’t a divinely ordained happy ending; it was the love that lit you up from the inside like a lightning strike, the love that transformed your life and made you more than your ordinary self, the name on your lips when you died. It didn’t even need to be requited.

One of the downsides of living in a place where technology was so advanced you could put the internet in your brain was the fact that it had the chance to go wrong in remarkably new and terrifying ways. For instance, a haptic virus that would entirely erase a person's inhibitions.
Any stray thoughts or repressed desires would be immediately acted on, no matter how inadvisable. A person might kiss their coworker, or punch their irritating boss, or balance on a windowsill on one foot.
And then it got into the Senate.
