Summary
On the night his backroom deal with the Scottish minister had been discovered by the Foreign Secretary and summarily sent to the press, he had spent an hour cloistered with Anthea and other trusted allies, processing damage control options. It became increasingly clear that there were none. He had instructed Anthea to ready the cottage and to make preparations to sell his flat in Chancery Lane. He had tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister, closed his email account, and crushed his burner phones with a fireplace poker. Then he’d gotten roaring drunk, finding no point in anything else.
He’d awoken in his flat as movers clattered and jarred his furniture in the room beyond, with no memory of getting home.
Apparently, in those lost blackout hours, in the knowledge that his life as he knew it had ended, he had written Inspector Lestrade a letter.
(Now they are snowed in together in an idyllic Cotswolds cottage. Oh no!)
