Jill exhaled so sharply it almost buckled her knees, a breath yanked straight out of her chest and made her head spin, but maybe that was just Kate; Kate leaning against the glass doors that opened out onto the balcony in nothing but a champagne-coloured bathrobe, and the world outside could have been collapsing into fire and ruin and Jill would still have been anchored, helplessly, completely, to that single sight, to the unfair, effortless way Kate existed as the goddess Jill would worship on hands and knees.

“Oh, Spain,” Serena had replied, fixated still on the broken, familiar skin against hers, but the offhand answer surprised a laugh out of Bernie that startled Serena. It wasn’t her old staccato guffaw, only a small breath pushed out from her bruised lungs, yet the sound seemed to frighten Bernie all the same, like she was a stranger to it.
