    “I thought Ilya was, like, the man here,” Hayden motioned. Something suspiciously sounding like Jackie’s voice in the back of his brain told him that wasn’t the right wording, but he was too tired and already too buzzed to care. Besides, this was Shane, he didn’t need to say the perfect thing. Shane knew what he meant.

    Scott shifted. “They are both men, Hayden” he said very formally. Hayden suddenly felt like his dad was lecturing him.

    Hayden sighed. “No, Shane, you know what I mean.”

    Shane’s brow furrowed in concentration. “Like, because I bottom?” He said, slightly embarrassed.

    Scott’s steady gaze on Hayden suddenly turned very sharp.

    “No!” Hayden started. “Well, maybe? I don’t know how that works. I just mean, like, you’re real gay and Ilya likes women, right?”

    OR 5 times Hayden realizes other people know his best friend better than him, and the 1 time Shane tells him himself.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    The author keeps Hayden in character, so much so, that it might take a while to realize that Hayden's surprise about his different interactions with Shane's family and friends is not for fun*, but shows how much he does not understand-and his total lack of knowledge about Shane's and JJ's challenges within the league. They are showing the reader how clueless Hayden is about his own role in Shane's and JJ's harassment by the Metros. It's an incredible way to show the toxicity of unacknowledged privilege.

    “Ilya, are you deflecting because YOU don’t want to go?” The brown eyes Ilya folded for every time narrowed, flashing from pleading to suspicious in an instant. “C’mon, it would be so nice to just be in real nature for a bit.”

    Okay, fine. Ilya did not want to go. As much as he loved their team, he did not want to share his precious summertime with Shane paddling around a lake like some kind of 1800s fur trader. And frankly, he did not want to find out what constituted “real” nature in Shane’s mind.

    Or: When Shane insists they partake in the annual Centaurs canoe trip, Ilya wants no part in it. Throughout the trip though, Ilya gets to reflect on all the ways he and Shane have grown individually, together, and by being well-loved by their team.

    As Anya was trying to decide, she heard the familiar steps of Papa walking up the back deck stairs. "Oh good," she thought, as she focused on pressing herself into Shane.

    Sure enough, a few moments later, Papa stepped into the room. It couldn't have been soon enough, because Shane's heart was going very fast and Anya was very worried about how he smelled. He went right to Shane, Anya felt one of his hands join Shane on her as he hugged Shane with the other.
