Tom once made a selfish, vainglorious decision, and it cost three brilliant young pilots their lives.
It was long enough ago that they didn’t haunt his thoughts incessantly, and most of the time he could sit at the helm without wondering if this would be the day he made another bad call and killed everyone in the process. But it never totally disappeared, that voice of doubt.
He tried not to dwell on how messed up it was that he carried this relentless, low-level anxiety that people were going to die and it would be his fault. When he came around in sickbay that was the first thing he demanded of the Doc,
