Summary
It's year seventy-three of the Hunger Games. The Tracy family are just about keeping afloat, as they have been ever since the death of Jeff Tracy, but Scott wakes on the morning of Reaping Day with a sinking feeling in his gut. Then two slips of of paper are drawn that change the family's life forever. All he can hope for is that the odds will stay in his favour. Then again, given how the Tracy family luck has been going, he doesn't have much hope.

Scott was having a shit day.
For once, the source of the shittiness was not a situation gone wrong or a complete lack of sleep or back-to-back rescues for at least 24 straight hours. In fact, he was nowhere near exceeding his flight hours for the week, which was a rarity in itself. But no. Scott was having a shit day because he'd finally been forced to catch up with all the overdue board meetings and assorted bureaucratic nonsense over at Tracy Industries. Quarterly reviews, project pitches, endless sign-offs on expenditure… You name it, they needed him for it.
He'd honestly rather be dealing with terrifying life-or-death rescues.

It’s like a fucked up dance, almost; they trade blows, bobbing and weaving, and Havoc’s got an advantage thanks to her armour that leaves Kayo with a broken nose and a map of bruises all over her abdomen, but in return Havoc gets a black eye and a split lip and a dislocated shoulder on top of all the bruises, so Kayo thinks she did pretty well.
Havoc winks at her just before the ceiling collapses between them, pearly white teeth stained red from all the blood but still stretching into a maniacal smile. Kayo runs for her life to avoid getting blown to pieces as the liquid starts to ignite and doesn’t think about it until late that night when she’s been locked in the infirmary by Grandma. Havoc’s face flashes into her mind in the darkness, and her blood boils.
