Summary
Six wasn’t Donald Fitzroy. He never would be. He didn’t want to be.
There were things between him and Claire that he had no hope of understanding, let alone trying to recreate on his own. They didn’t have inside jokes, and he hadn’t known her parents–those were things that he couldn’t talk about like Donald. That kind of connection had never been meant for someone like him, the idea long gone when he’d been served life without parole.
But she’d said that they were like family, and to him that had meant something. An unshakable loyalty and a responsibility already embedded deep within him when he’d promised Donald that he’d keep her alive.
Other than that, doing what he knew, he was figuring the rest out one agonizingly slow step at a time.

Summary
Court spent most nights in the juvenile detention facility burdened with the knowledge of what his father's blood felt like. He remembered the slimy texture of it and the way it stained his hands long after the worst of it had been washed away. His thoughts kept on circling back to that night and the sounds that his father made as he beat the living shit out of him, the quiet thump thump thump from where his fists connected with his father's meaty flesh. He hit and kept on hitting until the man finally stopped moving, stopped gurgling, stopped breathing. Later, the witness documents will say that it was loud, that Court ran into the room screaming and shouting, whaling like the wrath of God, but in his memories, it's always quiet. A dull, muted, and rhythmic thumping. Even now, after all these years he is a quiet man.
According to Fitzroy, this makes him a good man. But really, what Fitzroy means to say is that he is a good killer.
A good Gray-man.
