Anosmia (/ænˈɒzmiə/) is the inability to perceive odor or a lack of functioning olfaction.
After an accident when he was young, Castiel was left without a sense of smell. So much of society is based on pheromones and olfactory cues that his anosmia makes things rather awkward since the alpha can't sniff out a situation. As it would turn out, things are a lot more awkward than he could have even imagined pertaining to his coworker, Dean Winchester.

When Maria wakes up from a nightmare that ended with her death, the world isn't quite right anymore. Thia isn't expecting to see Dek when she walks through the ship's passageway, but here he is, with a very odd look on his face. She's had to do some quick work with her own coding, re-calibrating her emotional center to include reactions to Yautja expressions, and then building a library of Yautja expressions and their meanings once she realizes that there is no database to refer to. It's really more of a library of Dek's expressions and their meanings, since he's the only one she's got to reference, but it's better than nothing.
This, however, is a new one. She quickly catalogs it as “discouraged/resigned/grieving/tired” and files it away in an “unfinished” folder for later interpretation.
“Dek?” she asks. “What's wrong?”
“I can't {unintelligible} reach,” he says, and Thia blinks.

Time still passed in a weirdly shaped blur, and Shadow couldn't tell if he'd been sitting next to Rouge for a few minutes or a few hours, but he found he didn't mind it anymore. He moved closer to her until their sides touched, his head coming to rest on her shoulder. Her constant chatter stopped for a moment, but before he could begin to worry about it, her arm wrapped around his shoulders and she continued.
None of them were usually the cuddly type, but something about the physical closeness felt grounding, like an anchor keeping him from drifting away too far. Rouge didn't seem to mind, thankfully.
Or, Shadow dissociates pretty badly. Luckily, Rouge is there to provide some much-needed comfort
