    Summary

Niko was gone (had been gone, continued to be gone) for over nine months. Charles was there, but he was not. He was always with Crystal now, and never meeting Edwin's gaze. And Edwin was so alone he couldn't stand it.

"Edwin's hands stilled and his eyes focused on a spell entitled To conjure a shadow version of one who is lost. The warnings were longer than the spell. He had read no more than three lines before Edwin knew he was not using this spell to bring back Niko. The warnings explicitly stated that this shadow version was not linked to the person you had lost. It was an entirely new being, created from the spell caster and their memories of the missing person. Edwin would not attempt to build a new version of Niko. There was no way he could ever recreate her smile, her laugh, the things only she would say. He could never be what she was. He would not insult her memory by trying.

But he was not thinking about Niko.

All he could picture was Charles.

He knew, in every logical part of himself, that it would not be real. But it might be enough."

    Summary

No one’s ever been sweet to him, Charles thinks, aching, in the dark.

Maybe it was a ridiculous thing to think about a grown man he’d just met, but Charles’d always been like that. Too much, too fast, everyone he meets taking a little piece of his heart with him.

“I do not care for games, Mr. Moriarty—though I imagine you know that as well.”

“But you are capable of playing them.”

“Rather,” Mycroft said. “I know that you are propositioning me because you cannot have him.”

Moriarty faltered, just for a second. “Perhaps I simply aspire to the set.”

It was Mycroft’s turn to smile. “And you do not believe achieving that is possible. You are more transparent than you think.”

    Summary

When Shane Hollander looks into the future he sees— not a flat sheet of ice, not that, not anymore, but something equally as empty.

His backup plan was always to go to university. He hadn't thought he'd ever need it, not really. Especially not near the end, when everything felt so certain. But his grades were good, his mom made sure of that, so when he woke up in the hospital he already knew what he was going to do next. But after?

There's a standard path people take, he knows, that comes after school. But when he tries to picture it, slot himself into the picket fence and the corporate overhead fluorescents, it disappears. Like it was never going to be real at all.

(Or: after ending up at a jazz bar to celebrate the end of finals season, Shane Hollander finds himself where he never thought he'd be— in the orbit of NHL superstar Ilya Rozanov.)

    Summary

“Hudson Williams, great to meet you,” Hudson says, swooping in with his boy-next-door smile and a firm handshake. He looks absurdly good—shiny dark hair, broad shoulders, charming as hell. Like a glossy, well-lit Superman ripped straight from Connor’s earliest spank-bank memories.

    “Likewise, Mr. Williams, I’m—”

“I’m so sorry,” Hudson cuts in smoothly, already moving backwards a smidge with Connor in tow, hand pressing warmly against his spine. “But I’m actually here to steal this guy.”
