Summary
~He scrubs sleep from his eyes as he finally opens the door. “What do you want, Mordred?”
The annoyance in his tone startles the young knight. He hesitates for a moment before asking, “Why do you hate me? What did I do to upset you?”
It takes a moment for Merlin to process the questions. Is this really what he was woken for? Then he takes note of Mordred’s appearance. He looks like he’s been crying. Puffy, red eyes a stark contrast to the dark circles beneath them. Has he been losing sleep over this? As he leads Mordred to sit on the bench, he takes note of how much thinner and paler the boy is than he had been a month ago. Is he eating properly? Has he been training in this state?~The prophecy may be wrong about Mordred. Merlin regrets that it took the boy's declining health for him to realize as much.

A small sniff of humour brought his attention to Mordred. "Was it really not that obvious?" He asked.
Arthur blinked, not catching on. "You what now?"
Or
Arthur goes against Mordred in a gambling game except why is he loosing? And why is Merlin suddenly rooting for Mordred? (Merlin and Mordred get up to magic mischief's during a game of gambling...)

Summary
Instead of smuggling Mordred out of Camelot at the first opportunity, which is the most suspicious option in Merlin's opinion, the decision is instead made to pretend that the boy is someone else entirely for a few weeks and only then return him to the druids.
It works out better than expected, and what was a one-off becomes something of a regular practice.

Merlin went quiet for a moment, deep in thought. Feathery was a spur of the moment add-on, and a far too specific one at that. Suddenly, a wonderful idea, so wonderful it was as if some divine deity had crafted it and gently placed it in Merlin’s mind.
So Merlin grinned internally and said, without any doubt showing on his face, only pure and unadulterated innocence.
“You know, like Ciccen.”
OR: Merlin digs himself into a hole and decides to dig even deeper and make an entire religion up for a prank
